My Word for 2013 is. . .

Hey, Patty Smith Hall here. A few years ago, someone came up with the idea of focusing on one word to describe what they hoped to accomplish that year. I wasn't sold on the idea at first, mainly because I live with a family of solid resolutionists. But as a writer, I appreciate the editing genus of a one word resolution. Deciding is always tough, especially  when you need adjustments in so many areas like I do. But in the last few weeks as I prayed, one word kept creeping into my thoughts and in my Bible time.

Only problem was I didn’t want this word or the resolve it would take to to follow through. Why? Because the word that kept whispering through my heart during the last month was REST. Now anyone who knows me knows that I’m a whirlwind, a go-getter, always running always with  my nose to the grindstone. In my perfect world, I would plug out 3 to 4 books a year, keep an immaculate house, cook gourmet meals, be the perfect wife and mother, volunteer – anything and everything to keep busy from 7 AM to 12 midnight, seven days a week, 365 days he year.

But after this first week of the new year, I can tell you I'm wrong.

The Bible tells us to rest; on the Sabbath, in the Lord. It says that God knows when you laid down and when you rise up again. To not rest is to go against God’s word; It’s not treating the body He gave us like a temple.

To continuously run at full steam like I do is to continuously sin.

So this year, I’m learning to rest, both spiritually and physically. I’m going to bed at a decent hour  (11:30 to 11:45.) I’m going to relax in the evenings with my husband, reading or watching TV. I will spend time studying my Bible and writing in my prayer journal. My days will still be productive – in fact, I predict that I will get more done because I’ll have more energy to spend working during the day. So while I have other resolutions, my focus this year is on learning to rest.

Come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and you shall find rest  unto  your  souls.
                                                                                                                                                                    Matthew 11:28 – 29

Question: Have you chosen a word for this year? If so, what is it and what do you hope to learn from focusing on it?

  1. Thanks for a thought-provoking post. I haven't done much reflecting about the new year because the death of my mother-in-law right before Christmas put our family in the middle of a whirlwind of arrangements and an unplanned trip cross-country for her memorial. Our home, whether in Arizona or Florida, has been filled with company since before Christmas. Your post has prompted me to take a moment and think about 2013. I tend to be rather scattered. My son-in-law, Paul, says, "Don't show her anything shiny." He knows I'm easily distracted. So my word for 2013 will be "Focus."

  2. Thanks for the reminder that we are required by God to rest. How many times have I learned the hard way that God knows best!

My word this year is commitment. I thought I was just committing to writing every day but it really is about being committed to being a whole, healthy and spiritual person.

Merrilee, I am so sorry for your loss.

    Peace, Julie

  3. Hi Patty:

I just loved this comment you wrote:

If the above appeared in a mail order bride newspaper ad, you’d get thousands of replies. Have you written a mail order bride story? I’m a big fan of these.

I think ‘rest’ is a great one word. Like the Greeks, rest the mind, the body, and the soul. I like to quiet the mind and let God enter so I can feel His presence. That’s the best proof that God exists. Restore the soul and the mind/body will follow.

My word is ‘rejuvenate’. I’ve been getting too old in everything. It was time. I had no choice. : )

  4. Merrillee, so sorry to hear about your mother-in-law. Losing a dear family member can throw anyone in to a whirlwind. FOCUS is a great word for the year. I'm in a great Bible study right now that addresses both focus and rest--Becoming a Woman of Simplicity. It's really been speaking to my heart about the need to rest and focus on God.

Ah, Julie--those one words have a way of sneaking up on you, don't they? Last year, my word was relationships and learned SO MUCH about the various relationships in my life, including deepening my relationship with God.

  5. Vince, I'm a sucker for mail-order bride/groom books! Right now, I'm writing a contracted marriage story which has been lots of fun--it will be coming out in November.

And REJUVENATE is a great word--for body, mind and spirit!

  6. Rest is good. coming from someone who has been having sleep issues for months I know you can do so much more when rested.

I choose gratitude as last year for all its hardships I am grateful for what it taught me.

This year am keeping a gratitude jar and putting in blessing and things i am grateful for, including a cool change. I found focusing on the good things is much more healthy for me. and while my wrist has gotten me dow at times i can still look at the positive that i am 6 weeks closer now to healing.

  7. Merrillee, sending hugs and sympathy. So sorry about your mother-in-law.

Patti, love your word. REST! So important. So often overlooked.

My word is HOPE. God gave it in the middle of prayer. It wasn't what I wanted either. But I'm beginning to realize it's the word I need for the year ahead.

  8. Great post, Patty--and you shared lots of wisdom with us. I think our society is so geared to rushing and getting more things done, but the truth is we DO need to rest, as you pointed out. The Lord wants us to take care of the body He gave us, and if we're not getting proper rest, then we're not obeying Him! (preaching to myself here *smile*). Thanks for sharing this today. ~ Merrillee, I am so sorry to learn about your precious Mother-in-law. Keeping you in my prayers. ~ Hugs, Patti Jo Moore

  9. My thing is love. Showing more people how much i love them, because after being in the nursing home for 2 months, then i got to go home, they told me, i wouldn't be home long until i would be back permanent. So i want people to know how much i love them. God bless you and i love each of you.
