However, it was a fright of a different stripe!

My current WIP, “Stranded in a Cabin with a Romance Writer”, starts exactly this way:

CHAPTER ONE

It wasn’t a good day to die. So when Diana Hunter opened the front door of the secluded mountain cabin, she wasn’t pleased when she looked into the eyes of a five hundred pound black bear.
Eye-to-eye.
Frozen in time.
The shock hit before the fear.
Diana could smell the bear’s breath. It wasn’t pretty. The fur smelled wet and musky.
“I might be dead in a few seconds.”
Moo…moo…moo.
“Who’s mooing?”
Dina looked down and saw a bawling bear cub mooing like a human child imitating a cow.
The mama bear peered at her cub.
Bam!
Diana slammed the door and set the deadbolt. An angry pounding on the door soon followed. The bears intended to stick around.

****

This scene originally appeared later in chapter one but several contest judges wanted it to open the book, so I made the change.

BTW: The hero shows up at the cabin on his noisy motorcycle and scares the bears away. He thinks the woman is a tree-hugging talk-to-the-animals type ‘bear lady’ so he apologizes by saying, “I’m sorry if I scared your bears away.”

At least your heroine didn’t face a real bear! My cabin is in Colorado. I’m going to have to read your book to get a feel for the wilderness. I've imported your bear picture into my Scrivener project so it can 'greet' me each time I open the file. Thanks.

VinceVincehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12707773426729777989noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4945907563318808519.post-84970596468921639562013-04-08T07:50:38.075-07:002013-04-08T07:50:38.075-07:00Thanks, you all!
