Something Different

I'm Vickie McDonough, and this is my first post to the Craftie Ladies blog. I'm very excited to be here. People who are familiar with my western romance novels will be surprised to learn that I have a contemporary suspense coming out. Of the thirty books I've had release to date, only two have been contemporaries, and while many of my books have some suspense in them, none of them fit the suspense genre.

Rancher Under Fire releases in September. I never planned for this novel to be a true suspense book, and as a result, I had to do major edits on the story for it to please my editor. I found it hard to keep the tension coiled tight and to keep the action moving. I came to truly appreciate writers who can pen suspense after suspense while keeping their stories fast-paced and interesting. Margaret Daley, one of my best friends and critique partner, is the queen of writing intriguing chapter hooks, which make you have to turn the page to see what's happened. I'm back working on a historical set during the Oklahoma land rush days and in my comfort zone once again.

As a reader, do you have a genre you prefer? Do you tend stick to that genre or do you read others too?

Rancher Under Fire - Jackson Durant would go to any lengths to protect his young daughter and his ranch. He knows the puzzling incidents on his
homestead are no accidents. Someone is after him…but who? And
why? Reporter Mariah Reyes is determined to find out. She never
expected her pursuit of a story on the reclusive rancher would
endanger her life—nor that she’d fall for the cowboy. But when
Jackson’s daughter is kidnapped, she’ll do anything to help save
the little girl—even if it means becoming a target herself.

  1. Welcome, Vickie. I usually read historical romances, but not exclusively.

  2. Congratulations on the new book, Vickie! The challenge of writing in a different genre will give you fresh insight in your "comfort zone" books. When I'm not reading historicals, I like women's fiction and the occasional Amish contemporary.

  3. Love reading both, historical and suspense. But can't write suspense to save my life! My characters spend too much time inside their heads - it would get them killed in any other book! Look forward to reading this.

  5. I love your western historical books, and can't wait to read this one too! Good for you for trying something new. I love any kind of clean/Christian romance where I can feel a connection to the characters.

  8. Hi Vickie! While I write mostly historical romance, I do like writing and reading contemporary romance, too. It's a nice change of pace. But writing contemporary suspense--that'd be something entirely new. :)
    Looking forward to reading yours!!!

  13. Hi Vickie - so lad to have you join us. As for my reading tastes, they're very eclectic. I read most types of romance, women's fiction, straight fantasy and science fiction as well as mysteries.

  14. Historical romances are my favorites, but I read an occasional contemporary romance. I admire those who can write suspense. It's a skill that has thus far eluded me.

  15. HI Vickie, I love historical as you know but I also like contemporary and the LIS books. I tend to jump around. I read most except heavy suspense and chick lit.
