Legacy of Adventure

When I think of men who have influenced my life, I have to mention my grandfather. My grandmother married him at the turn of the century because he was the best dancer around and his love of life has influenced our whole family for decades. I thought of him several days ago when my sisters and I and my niece all took a European cruise to Spain, France, Italy and Greece -- how he would have loved it and what a good time we had together! I trace some of our family's love of travel to the zest he showed for life. Is there someone in your family who has given you values that you hold today?

  1. Your grandfather sounds so much like my grandpa! It's actually funny how much he does.
My grandparents, aunt, mom, sister, and I have been on many vacations together. My grandparents have always loved to travel, but did not get to do much until their kids were grown some(they had 6 kids). Now, the 6 of us get to go on vacations(usually 2) every summer. It's so much fun.
My grandpa is often found missing. After a brief moment of panic, we find him talking with a complete stranger. By this point, he will basically know the person's life story! My grandpa just has something about him that brings the best out of everyone!

  2. I did not get to really know my grandparents because most of the time we lived too far away to see them often and they died while I was too young to really know them. But my father was my guide to how to treat people. He never met someone he didn't find at least one nice thing about (and I imagine sometimes that was hard). The strange thing is that my father and I were so much alike we clashed a lot as I was growing up--but we still loved each other very much. I always felt sorry for my mother who had to play referee.

  3. Hannah -- Your grandfather sounds like a gem! I feel very blessed to have known my grand parents -- I know that's not true for many people.

  4. Ellen -- Isn't that something how we often are so much like our parents? I'm quite a bit like my mother.

  5. What a wonderful trip, Janet!! We're looking at spending a couple of days of our vacation with my sister and husband.

That's wonderful how your grandfather affected the whole family dynamic.

  6. It's so funny to me to hear grandpa referred to as a gem, but you know...that actually might be a good way of explaining him! Hahaha!
    Thanks for that!
