Westside Christian High School does Steel Magnolias

Terri Reed here, tired from help with costumes and set for my daughter's high school play rehearsal. They are doing Steel Magnolias. Anyone remember the movie? The year was 1989--I had just moved to New York to model. My husband and I lived in a dinky one bedroom apartment on the upper Westside of Manhattan. We saw the movie in a huge cina-plex near Lincoln Center. I cried, I laughed and cried some more. My husband thought the whole thing too sappy for words. That's a man for you.

Well, my daughter is playing Shelby. I have a hard time watching her on stage in this role. She does a fabulous job. I'm so proud of her. The play opens on Thursday, runs through the weekend and then the following weekend.

I'll be the one sitting in front with a box of kleenex in my lap.

  1. Oh, that would be difficult to watch your daughter in that role! But how fun to see it on stage! Tell her to break a leg. :)

  2. Wish we were there to all go together and cheer.

I love that movie. I'm not a big Shirley McLain fan, but I thought she nailed her part.

  3. This is the first I have heard of Steel Magnolias as a play. I am with you though...lots of kleenex are needed!

Nothing like being a stage mom, huh?

    Peace, Julie

  4. I absolutely ADORE this movie!!! Love, love, love it *grin*

How exciting that their doing this! : O I can imagine it would be difficult to see her play that part, but she must be an accomplished actress if she was assigned that role!

Wish we could all go! Lol....a fun time had by all I'm sure! Let us know how it goes!

My old high school is working on their musical right now. My sister is in it and they have 2 weeks left, crunch time!! It's Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. I'm going twice out of four shows for the public *grin* SO excited to see her in it!!

  5. Missy, it is so difficult. Especially when she has her diabetic attack. Interestingly enough she's dating a boy who's diabetic. He gave her pointers on what it feels like to have an insulin attack.

  6. Pam, it would be awesome if you all could come. I agree Shirley McClain did a fabulous job in the movie. I also like her in Guarding Tess.
I loved the whole female cast in the movie. The play is very similiar.

  7. Julie, I believe that the play was done on Broadway before it was made into a movie. The writer used the play as a way to deal with his young sister's death. Very sad.
Yeah, being a stage mom is fun, but I have to remind myself to let go and try not to control too much.

  8. Hannah,
Oh, I love that play. How fun! I might suggest that to the drama director for the spring.
They try to do a musical every other year so not sure they would do it this year since they did a musical last spring.
I'm sure your sister will be smashing in her role.

  9. Yeah, I'm really looking forward to it! The high school does a musical in the fall, Pizazz (which is our variety show, basically a talent show) in the winter (February/Marchish) and then the One Act in the spring. So we keep busy throughout the year *grin* PLUS we have our band/choir concerts so it's awesome. However, now that I'm a freshman in college I just have to watch all these things, *sad*. But it'll be fun too. Unfortunately my college doesn't have enough of budget so we can't do musicals....makes me so sad because I LOVE doign them!

  10. I don't like many movies but I loved this one, it was so funny and since I am from the south it fit right in with me.
