Go Red for Women by Merrillee Whren

As romance writers, we are very aware of affairs of the the heart. February is a month filled with things about hearts. Although it isn't February yet, this important promotion is coming up soon. National Wear Red Day® is Friday, February 3, 2017. Why am I talking about this day? Heart disease and strokes are the cause of one out of three deaths in women. I am particularly tuned into this because cardiovascular disease is prevalent in my family. Both of my parents had heart attacks, and one of my brothers had a heart attack and another had a stroke. So I am very aware that I must be vigilant when it comes to heart disease.

I make a point to exercise daily and try to eat healthy foods. Eating healthy is the hardest part because so many things that aren't good for you or are fattening taste so good.

Do you do anything special to keep your heart healthy?

I'll be giving away a copy of the second book in my Front Porch Promises series, A LOVE TO CALL MINE, to one person who leaves a comment. I will draw the name of the winner on January 28, 2017 at 9PM MST.

The first book in the series, A PLACE TO CALL HOME, is on sale for 99 cents.

Merrillee Whren is the winner of the 2003 Golden Heart Award presented by Romance Writers of American. She is married to her own personal hero, her husband of forty-plus years, and has two grown daughters. Connect with her on her Facebook page and sign up for her newsletter.

  1. I like you try to eat healthy. In the mornings I try to do a fruit smoothie( beets, pineapples, berries and ginger with flax seeds. I take the stairs most of the time and try not to sit all day at work.

My dad and uncle both died from heart disease. It is something that I always have to be mindful of in my life. I had my stress test done in November and everything looks good.

  2. Sonetta, good for you in being proactive in trying to prevent heart disease. Your smoothie sounds good except for the beets. :)

  3. Hi Merrillee! I try to eat healthy, too. And I'm hoping to start daily walks as soon as the weather in Michigan is more fitting for it. Lol. I need to quit sitting around all winter and be more active! I know it will help me feel better and keep me healthier.

  4. I try to eat healthy, with varying success. :) I do exercise 6 days a week. That may help heart disease, but really, it just makes me feel better in general. I can tell when I've missed a day.

  5. Brittina, one thing I've done when the weather outside isn't good for walking is walking indoors. I've used the Leslie Sansone videos for 3 & 4 mile walks. I used them so much that I know the steps and do my own routine while I watch TV. It makes the time go fast.

  9. Tina, I'm so glad you are doing the right things to deal with your heart disease. My brother had his heart attack when he was 44. He is now in his 60s.

  11. Hi Merrillee. I'm a big Leslie Sansone fan as well. I use her walking videos about 4 times a week and then I do strength training the other 2 days with Jillian Michaels videos. My husband bought me a Fitbit for Christmas and I have been tracking my steps (10,000 a day). Since I hit 45, I noticed my metabolism has come to a screeching halt. I seem to have to exercise twice as hard to stay in shape and keep my heart healthy!
