Love Me Some Autumn

So far this fall, North Carolinians have survived two hurricanes—Florence and Michael. And the temperatures are only just beginning to feel like autumn.

Autumn is my favorite season—and I can't let it pass by without a celebration.

So I ventured to the Farmer's Market—one of my favorite autumn activities—and decorated my house. From the mountain orchards of the Blue Ridge, farmers sell a variety of apples, perfect for applesauce or pie. Fall is also my excuse for buying mums, pumpkins, chai tea and apple cider.

When my girls were small, every autumn we planned a long weekend to a different corner of NC and camped. Okay, here's my version of camping—renting a cabin with electricity, indoor plumbing and preferably close to a larger lodge where all meals are provided.

But the cabin must have a fireplace, and I lugged some of my favorite autumnal children's books with me to read aloud to them in front of the fire after making s'mores. Books like Miss Suzy by Miriam Young from my own childhood; Blueberries for Sal by Robert McCloskey; and We're Going on a Bear Hunt by Michael Rosen—which we re-enacted.

These weekends included hikes to lacy, cascading waterfalls and picking a bushel of apples from a local orchard.

But with flown-the-nest college and career girls, my mountain vacation has been reduced for now to a a stolen afternoon trip to the Farmer's Market. This year, I bought Magna-bonum's (ranked as one of the ten greatest Southern apples) and here's the apple pie that resulted.

How do you celebrate the arrival of autumn? What autumn traditions have you built with your family?

  1. Lisa, I love Autumn as well. It's fun decorating the house with the colors of fall. Your Magna-bonum pie looks delicious.

    1. It is delicious. There are so many things about fall I love—the state fair, family reunions, church homecoming. And the weather! Southerners say autumn is our reward for surviving sultry summer. :)

  2. With both of our sons' birthdays in September and October and our anniversary, Autumn is my favorite season. Plus, I live in an area where the leaves change, and the colors are magnificent.

    1. My favorite of the leaf colors is orange—a bit rare, but spectacular. Thanks for stopping by.

  4. Hi, Lisa. What a lovely post. There are so very many things I adore about autumn. Like yourself, I adore going to the Farmer's Market. I'm a big pumpkin fan so that, along with the crisp fall air, are my favorite things. Glad you made it through the storms in one piece. Blessings.

    1. I like pumpkins, too. The only time I really like orange. I never realized how pumpkin obsessed Americans must be until I had friends from Costa Rica come last year during October. In the grocery store—pumpkin tea, cookies, coffee, etc... They were amazed. :)

  5. Lisa, such a lovely blog post and beautiful pictures. Georgia is in its fall glory, which makes me smile. Cool but sunny days and changing leaves that look gorgeous in their autumn colors.

Long walks with falling leaves provide pleasure to this gal who loves summer but also enjoys the crisp days of fall. A visit to a local Farmer's Market and yummy apples make me happy too!

  6. Hi Lisa. Loved your fall post. Thanks so much for sharing, enjoyed your photos. We winter in SC. Your weather is much different than northern Illinois, we are further along in the season. We have already had our first measurable snowfall, but it is still the perfect time to leaf-peek. And next weekend we will enjoy a football game at the U. of I. Thanks again for the lovely blog post.

    1. Enjoy your game. I like snowfall only if it lasts one day! Thanks for joining the conversation. :)

  7. What a lovely post. I feel your love of autumn. Three out of five siblings have birthdays in October so we were always celebrating something. However, fall is also the busiest time on our farm. We have cattle to round up from the pastures were they spent the summer. Wheat needs to be planted, soybeans, milo and corn have to be harvested. But the best thing about the last days of fall also mean the work is done and winter becomes a time to rest.

  10. Hello everyone, two month ago my husband left me and abandoned our kids with me without saying a word to me, no phone calls, no texts and when i text him he don't reply until this very faithful day i was reading a blog post about single moms and how they do cope, i was scrolling through the comment section when i came across someone's comment who testified about the great work of this man, i quickly copied his email address and contacted him straight and explained to him all i was passing through and he said my daughter you don't have to worry anymore you have come to the right place for help. He told me what i needed to do which i did without hesitation. Behold the next morning i heard a knock on the door only for me to find out it's my husband who has left me for 2 months on his kneels crying and apologizing for all the pains he has caused me. I felts as if i was dreaming but i soon realized that i wasn't, it was my husband, he came back to me. Thank you so much Lord spiritual. Am forever grateful.. I have promise to announce this to the world in appreciation for your good gesture. if you are facing similar challenges in your marriage do not hesitate to reach him..
