Alice in Wonderland

Terri Reed here. This is a busy week in our house as my children get ready for opening night of
Alice in Wonderland. My daughter will be the red chess queen and my son Humpty Dumpty. I tried to make his costume but that is out of the scope of my skill set. I am too embarrassed to even show anyone my attempt. However, I know the play will be fabulous. My kids love the theatre and acting. Especially when they can be characters. I have always loved the story of Alice in Wonderland. There' s something about falling down the rabbit hole into a different world that appeals to my imagination. My favorite version is the animated Disney movie, but the newest version with Johnny Depp as the Madhatter has become a second favorite. I can't decide which is my favorite character though. In the animated version its the white rabbit and the Cheshire Cat. But in the new version I think its the Madhatter or the White Queen played by Ann
Hathaway. Of course it could just be that I like Johnny Depp. I remember 21 Jump Street very clearly. I was in college and had a crush on him. Still do if truth be told.

So you do have a favorite Alice in Wonderland character? or version of the story?

  1. I know I read the book and loved it and have seen a few different versons of the film not sure my favourite or my favourite character. Maybe the Cheshire cat.

  2. I haven't seen either one, Terri. I do like fantasy stories (LOVING the new ABC show Once Upon a Time!) but I never got into this one. I do remember Tom Petty's crazy video with this theme. I think it's awesome your kids are into the performing arts.

  3. I think Alice in Wonderland scared me as a child LOL. I love Johnny Depp, too, and have the movie in my TBW pile.

Tom Petty's version was awesome. It won an award for special effects and really didn't have many.

  5. It always scared me as well! So I never watched the whole thing. I guess I need to see the new Depp movie so I'll know what it's about. Or I should read the book. :)

I hope your kids have a blast doing the show!

  6. I've read both Alice In Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass many, many years ago and did enjoy them, though I think a lot of the subtext went right over my head at the time.
Favorite character, I guess, would have been Alice herself - loved that she had such unusual adventures.

  7. I never really got Alice and Wonderland as a kid, although the cat was cute, maybe I need to revisit as an adult? Congratulations to your kids Terri! What fun! Enjoy watching them and get it on film, they'll love seeing it as adults :)

  8. We have a set of the books dated in 20's. I loved them.
So did both my kids. I'd forgotten about Tom Perry's video.
Karen, we watched the pilot of Once Upon a Time. I really liked it too. Very clever.
Interesting that it would scare you Pam and Missy. I can't relate. I watched Creature Feature as a child so Alice seemed fun and exciting rather than scary.
I will film the play. It should be fun.
    Have a great day everyone.

  9. I, also, never got into this particular book or movie! It just never appealed to me. My kids have never really liked it either and they are in college now but even as children they never liked it!

  12. Terri,
LOL, I was afraid I was the only one who remembered Creature Feature with Dr. San Guinari (remember his wild hair).

When I was about 9 or 10, I watched The House on the Hill with Vincent Price. Scared me to death!

After I saw Jaws, I wouldn't sleep with my feet off the bed for weeks. Who knew whether or not that pesky shark had friends and they just might wind up in my Nebraska bedroom. Luckily, my poster of Peter Frampton was there to fight them off.

  15. Six days after my sixth birthday, my mother and I took a train from Ohio to California. There we boarded a ship and headed to Japan, where my Dad was stationed with the military. For my birthday that year, I had received the book, Alice in Wonderland.

Each day on the ship, my mother and I had a quiet time when she read the story to me. Alice holds a place in my heart because of that voyage and the special time with my mother.

BTW, we shared a room with another army wife and her three children. It was a tiny area with bunk beds. The big bathroom was down the hall. Don't think plush cruise ship...this was a military transport vessel. Very basic. Plus, everyone got seasick. :)

  17. I was never a huge Alice friend but my best friend wrote a YA that just sold and it's a spin-off on Alice in Wonderland. Basically about Alice's great-great grandaughter. It's an awesome story and thus my fave version so far. lol

  18. Wow good memory to have Debby.
Jessica, what't the title of the YA and when does it come out?

  19. I'm not sure if the pub settled on a title but the working title is Splintered. Comes out spring of 2013 with Amulet. :-)
