Christmas favorites

Today is December 1, and this is Merrillee who is starting the countdown to Christmas. One of the best things about being a writer is connecting with our readers. So I'm going to ask you to share with us some Christmas favorites.

What is your favorite Christmas book?
What is your favorite Christmas movie?
What is your favorite Christmas song?
What is your favorite Christmas cookie?
What is your favorite Christmas candy?
What is your favorite Christmas decoration?

And I have two final questions. Do you like to get books for Christmas? If you don't have an e-reader, would you like to get one for Christmas?

Merry Christmas to all of our wonderful readers.

  1. Hi Merrillee, your tree is beautiful! As for favorites, it's hard to narrow down to just one. I like that there are so many new Hallmark and Lifetime holiday movies to choose from. Debbie Macomber's Trading Christmas was a cute movie. (I like Tom Cavanaugh.) And I really liked the new Janette Oke movie, Love's Christmas Journey. My hubby kindly sits through all the romances without complaining. :)

  2. Karen,
Good for your hubby. I always forget to watch the Hallmark movies. We record so many shows and watch them later, so if it's not on the schedule to record, I don't remember to record them. Thanks for sharing.

  7. Favorites? Hmm, Not real fond of Christmas yet, but I'm working on it. Favorite book? I don't think I have one. Favorite movie? Miracle on 34th street (original version). Favorite food? Pecan Pie. Favorite cookie? Probably old fashioned, homemade chocolate chip. Favorite decoration? My nativity scenes, yes, I have several. I love them all, but the carved one is probably my all time favorite. Your tree is beautiful, maybe it will inspire me to get mine out today. Maybe. :)

  8. What is your favorite Christmas book? A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens. Try to read it every year around my birthday in December. I started the tradition when I was studying in my college library during exams and found it. It kept me sane!

What is your favorite Christmas movie? It's A Wonderful Life. I try to watch it multiple times.

What is your favorite Christmas song? God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen. Note: The comma is in the CORRECT spot.

What is your favorite Christmas cookie? I discovered a gluten free gingerbread recipe that keeps me from missing my gingerbread men.

What is your favorite Christmas candy? Love the stick peppermints and ribbon candy. Not to eat but to display!

What is your favorite Christmas decoration? I love my little Chrismon tree.

And I have two final questions. Do you like to get books for Christmas? ABSOLUTELY. As an aside: I have changed my mind about reading Christmas books until after Thanksgiving. I start in October.

If you don't have an e-reader, would you like to get one for Christmas? I have a Kindle but would love a Kindle Fire this Christmas.

    Merry Christmas to all!

    Peace, Julie

  10. Missy, my caramels are actually chocolate with walnuts, so I don't think it's the same recipe. But I can share the recipe.

The recipe came from my grandmother who cooked over a wood stove, thus the phrase, "take from the fire."

    CHOCOLATE NUT CARAMELS

    Ingredients:

    2 cups sugar
1 1/2 cups white corn syrup
    2 cups cream
    3 squares bitter chocolate
    1 1/2 cups chopped walnuts
    1 cup butter (not margarine)
    2 teaspoons vanilla

Directions: Put sugar, syrup, butter and one cup cream in a kettle and bring to a boil. When it is boiling briskly, add the other cup of cream a little at a time so mixture keeps boiling. Boil until a thread of the mixture is brittle in cold water. (Soft ball on a candy thermometer) Take from the fire and add chocolate pieces and nuts. Beat until chocolate is all melted. Stir in vanilla. Pour into a shallow, buttered pan to cool. After cooling, remove from pan and cut into one-inch squares.

  11. Devotedtoquilting,
I have to confess that the tree in the photo is from last year. I am in the middle of putting up decorations, and the tree is the last to go up. That one from last year is a real tree. I also have a fake tree in my living room. I'm not doing a real tree this year because none of our kids is coming. So we will be emptynesters for Christmas.

I like to put up my Christmas stuff as early as possible because I have a lot. I figure that I might as well get as much time out of it as possible.

  12. Julie,
Thanks for sharing. Glad you found a gluten-free gingerbread cookie. I can't imagine having to eat a gluten-free diet.

  13. CHRISTMAS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Just had to get that out there lol XD I am an avid fan of Christmas, Missy can attest! Here goes nothin':

Book: WAY too hard. There's too many. Though one of my favorites is The Christmas Miracle of Jonathon Toomey. If you haven't read this children's novel, it is a MUST read, I promise you won't be disappointed!
Movie: Might have to agree with Missy there....Elf, Grinch, Holiday in Handcuffs is hilarious! There's way too many :) LOL!
Song: Hmmmm I love David Archulet's Christmas album, but right now I'm listening to Bing Crosby croon out his holiday toons to me and am pretty happy : )
Cookie: Mom's homemade sugar cookies, hands down
Candy: My sister's peanut butter fudge YUM-O!!!!
Decoration: Has to be the tree probably...I've got on in my dormroom, one in my living room at home, and one in my bedroom at home LOL! Though it's the combination of the tree, the Nativity scene, the Santa and Nutcracker collection etc that really makes it : )

LOVE books for Christmas! Who doesn't??? And I already have an ereader lol.
THanks for SUCH a fun post, Merrillee!!!

  16. At the bookshop I got asked a question why do we have gingerbread at Christmas time and if there was a significance. I really had no answer. I thought maybe its an english or american things that gingerbread is something that is associated with warmth and the smell and a wintery thing more than summer.
Or maybe its the spice but I really had no idea anyone here know the reason?

  17. Hannah,
Thanks for sharing. I love hearing everyone's answers. I'll have to check out the children's novel. I loved reading those when I was teaching school.

  18. Jenny,
It's interesting that Christmas cookies and candy are more of an American tradition. Sorry you aren't feeling well. Hope you are better tomorrow.
