Ask Elnora--About Moving? Lenora Worth

We are all moved in, but we are not completely unpacked! So my fabulous friends, let's talk about why writers are such pack rats. Big Daddy got his part done months ago. Guess wo was the hold-up? Elnora kept things from as far back as childhood! But before I could throw anything away or pack it up, I had to sit down and go throough all of it! I laughed, I cried, I remembered things I'd tried to forget and I forgot things I should have remembered.

But doing this my way, in my own time, prepared me for the trip that would take me across the country to a new place. I found every rejection letter I'd ever received. I found versions of every manuscript I'd ever tried to write. But finding those things reminded me of how far I've come and how my journey toward publication became a reality. That was a long hard trip. The longest trip and a road I'm still traveling. I still have a lot of ideas to unpack, a lot to get through because my story is still being told. So--how do you store up a lifetime of memories? And why do writers hold on to things? Let's discuss!

  1. I still have all the valentine cards given to me while in elementary. My husband just shakes his head.

  2. Lenora, I would do the same thing. I can't clean out things without re-reading letters or looking at photos, traveling down Memory Lane.

    Congrats on the move! :)

  3. Hi Elnora:

This is very funny. I keep things that I don’t even know I have anymore. I keep things I know I should have somewhere but know it would take weeks to find. I have books I can’t find so I go out and buy a second copy. (I have this wonderful computer data base of the thousands of books I own but it is useless because it doesn’t tell me where they are!)

My only consolation is that my wife is much worse than I am. I just tell her to put stuff in boxes and label them for the estate sale for when we’re gone. And so it goes.

  5. Lenora, I loved reading about getting ready to move because it brought back memories of my many moves. I had to go through stuff every time I moved. If it weren't for the moves, I'm afraid my house might be a candidate for "Hoarders." Since my husband is a "thrower" and I'm a "keeper" we even each other out. When we moved from Chicago to Florida, I finally threw out the first manuscript that I submitted to a publisher. It was bad, and I have no idea why I kept it all those years.

  6. I am so glad to know that I am not the only one who is a pack rat, My Mom saved everything even the bread wrapper ties, so I do too.
We now have our house for sale and anticipate a move to another state and I dread all the stuff that will have to be gave away-thrown away or left behind...
Too much stuff everywhere and it is all worth something to ME..

  7. Oh dear, your post reminded me of all the "stuff" I keep saying I'll go through but never seem to get around to doing. Sigh. Maybe it'll take a move. Congratulations on your successful move!

  8. Good comments, all. Yes, I'm the keeper and Big Daddy is the thrower. I do feel like a hoarder at times. I think I attach emotions and memories to things way too much. I still have bed jacket that belonged to my mother and I finally let go of my daddy's old bathrobe that had to be forty years old or older. But it kept his memory close. The weird thing--I found poems I'd written in high school that mirrored things happening in my life today. Did I never grow up or what???

  9. Congratulations on the move! ~ Wow, I'm so glad to read about fellow pack-rats....and I'd thought I was one because I taught school for so many years, LOL (always thought my little students could use various items for crafts). ~ One of my Winter projects is to de-clutter--of course, that's my project EVERY season *sigh*. Blessings as you get settled in your new home, Patti Jo

I have the first letters some pen pals ever sent and many others, have my cards when i was born and first birthday (she kept them). 21st and special cards. job rejects i need to toss!!!!!!!!!!
after moving there was stuff in the shed I hadn't looked at for years and thought whats the point keeping it. I couldnt get rid of my postcards but I do try to be more proactive now.

  11. Thank you, Patti Jo. It is amazing how we tuck things away. But I'm finding it's also good to let go and start fresh. Jenny, it's always hard to go back through things that belonged to a loved one. You are brave to move forward. We are so glad to have you as our pen pal.
