In Celebration of Hats & Giveaway!

I'm Keli Gwyn, and I wear hats. I've even been called the Hat Lady at church and have been teased about not wearing a hat on the Sundays I forget to don one.

Some might call hats outmoded, but they still hold an important place today.

Some hats have a job to do. Think of the hard hats worn by firefighters or construction workers.

A mortarboard can bring about feelings of pride. The hats worn by members of our Armed Forces can instill a sense of patriotism.

Hats can be fun. Baseball caps can advertise our favorite teams or let others know what our hobbies and interests are.

My first Love Inspired Historical, Family of Her Dreams, a June release, takes place in the 1860s. In those days a lady wouldn't be caught in public without her hat.

The heroine of my story, Tess Grimsby, has a huge hat. The hero, Spencer Abbott, thinks of it as being "the size of Texas."

Tess's hat is "a frothy sea of teal tulle on an indigo base with three gorgeous peacock feathers." The hat pictured looks similar to hers.

While Tess's hat isn't practical, she loves it. Her hat is her trademark, and she won't give it up, even though she gives up a number of other things.

What is something in your life others might consider
impractical but you wouldn't want to part with?

Do you enjoy wearing hats?
If so, what are your favorites?

  1. Congratulations on your new book, Keli! I love hats. Makes me feel like dress-up time as a kid, which was always great fun. They only come out as sun protection or for special occasions, though.

  2. Gorgeous hat, Keli! I used to be into hats, not so much anymore, but my daughter is big time. At the moment, her favorite is a cream colored fedora. :D Not exactly the historical female style.

  3. I've always wished I had a hat head :) I pick out a hat and put it on and scare myself. Yesterday at water aerobics, I was the only lady without a hat. Hmmm, I'll have to rethink this.

  4. Hey, Keli, I don't think blogger prompts commenters for their email address like WP blogs do. Every time I try to sign up in a way other than my google account it won't let me, and I know you can't see my addy from that, so I imagine most others would be the same. Just thought I'd mention that, because I was about to share the giveaway on FB

  5. When I was a child, my Mom wore hats to church all the time. It's kinda fun to know someone still likes to wear them :)

  6. I would love to wear hats but I have a hard time finding one that looks good with my short hair. I 'll keep trying. Who knows? Maybe I'll finally find one that I like.

  7. Hats and my head don't get along....or maybe it's my face. At any rate I look awful in hats so I don't even wear them in winter. (I do wear hoods though and earmuffs!)

My books are the one thing that other people view as impractical. Pfffft. I don't pay them any mind. How on earth could a book be impractical? The very idea boggles the mind.

Don't enter me in the draw -- I'm not in the US and I almost have your book anyway...just as soon as the postal carrier decides to deliver it!!!!

  8. I am not a hat wearer, but my husband wears baseball caps. We have a hat shop here in town that has all the silly hats & it's fun to go in there just to try one on! I'm not sure if I lived in that time period, that I'd want to wear a hat (scandalous I know, lol)! The Kentucky Derby has some very unusual hats that the women wear. Just some hat random thoughts :-D Thanks for sharing a few pictures of your hats and for the chance to win a copy of your book!

  9. Thanks for sharing in my excitement, Christine. I look forward to the day we have LIH releases the same month and get to be shelf buddies.

I wear hats for fun and for protection from the sun. The sun gets pretty intense during our long, hot California summers.

  10. Sandra, it sounds like you have a fashionista for a daughter, too. :-)

Hats can really show a person's character. My heroine's hat certainly says a lot about her. I love how her HUGE hat plays into the story.

  11. Pamela, I wonder what would happen if you took a hat-wearing friend shopping with you. Perhaps she'd have ideas about which type of hats would work well for you. Just a thought.

  12. Thanks for the heads up, Sandra. I didn't realize Blogger doesn't ask for email addresses the way my Wordpress blog does. I was just concerned about protecting our blog visitors' private information. Another group blog I'm part of had a big problem with this once. Looks like I might get to play Nancy Drew when I attempt to contact the winner.

  13. Betti, those memories of your mom wearing hats must be special to you. I like writing historical romances because I get to return to the days when hats were an important part of a woman's attire.

  14. Nana, I wish you well in your search for a hat you like that flatters you. Once you find that perfect fit, you just might join the fun of those of us in the hat-wearing contingent. =)

  15. Kav, hats aren't for everyone. I wonder what it was like for a woman of yesteryear who didn't care for the way hats fit her head. Did she just suffer, or did she visit a milliner and have a hat made especially for her?

Thanks for your support. It means a great deal to me. I hope you enjoy reading Spencer and Tess's story as much as I enjoyed writing it. =)

  16. Trixi, it is interesting to think about how the women of yesteryear dealt with the fashion expectations, isn't it? If they defied them, were they whispered about behind fans or considered so ill-mannered as not to be worthy of receiving social calls? Makes one wonder.

While searching for Tess's over-sized hat, I saw many Kentucky Derby hats. Wow! Some of them are rather...interesting. =)

  17. Keli, I'm now a hat wearer. I've managed to begin quite a collection, but I'm enjoying it.

  18. I have a small head, so hats never seem to fit. I finally started wearing a ball cap here in AZ to protect my head while I play tennis, but I have to buy a kids size so it will fit.

  19. Leann, hats can be such fun. Which of yours is your favorite?

  20. Merrillee, I would imagine the AZ sun can be intense. It's bad enough here in California. I think you're wise to protect yourself with a cap. Are you able to find styles you like in the small sizes? I doubt you want one with Elsa, Anna and Olaf. =)
