Celebrating Family!

Don't you just love family vacation time? Especially once the kids get older, and it's harder and harder to keep them at home or off the computer or from texting their friends. :)

Family vacation time, away from home, gives you a captive audience! (Can you see me rubbing my hands together gleefully??) :)

It reminds me of days gone by. Of times when my kids were little and didn't have all the distractions that the teen years bring. My husband and I can spend uninterrupted time with them and enjoy true family time beyond a quick meal together. We can walk together, eat together, watch TV together, talk, play games, dig in the sand, cook together...

The photo above is of last year's beach vacation. A land/water football game between my husband and kids. Of course, I was the photo taker. :) I love summer and summer vacation!! What about you? Do you have any summer family traditions?

  1. I have no family (well I have two brothers but they have their own family) so no family vacations. But when my parents were alive and we were kids my dad always took us somewhere for a family vacation for a couple of weeks during the summer.

  2. Ellen, I also enjoy short trips with friends. It's usually writer friends, and we get away to work on our writing. No matter who I go with, I love to get away. Especially the beach!

  3. Missy I wanted to thank you for the little bag and bookmarks! They are lovely. I received them today. It made my day thank you.

I love family vacations. We normally bring extended family with us too. It makes it everything so much more fun!

  4. I miss that "family" time when the kids were younger and still at home. I think of our family vacations.

Part of the fun was listening to audio books during the drive. We shared some great books with our kids.

I remember one time we were driving through Alabama and we were listening to a PG Wodehouse Bertie & Jeeves story. We were all laughing so hard and I looked over and people in the other cars on the Interstate were staring at us.

    We laughed even harder.
    Ah, a good memory!

  5. Some years we just can't go on vacation but we always take a few days for special picnics and play bocce ball or toss a frisbee. We also try to catch concerts in the park and local fairs. Just being together and relaxing is wonderful!

  7. Lyn, what a great idea! I've done audiobooks with my husband before, but not since we had kids. I'll have to give it a try!

  8. Mez, sometimes those spur of the moment, close-to-home trips are the best!

Last year for one of the breaks (can't remember which one), we went to Atlanta and did several things--World of Coke, botanical garden, Aquarium. It was fun to visit places we drive by all the time. :)

  9. Missy,
Your beach photo is precious. Isn't it typical of moms to never be in any of the shots because we have to take the picture!
Our family loves mountains, so our summer camping trips always went northwest--Colorado, Wyoming, Montana. Ah, those were the days.

  10. Yes, Linda. My husband has started making sure to take a photo of me because I kept complaining that my kids would never know what I looked like when they were young! :)

  11. My family has always traveled together! We see each other, literally,, every day, but the family time on vacations is special. The trips always include me, mom, sister, aunt Donna, and grandparents. When we were younger, dad would come and sometimes 2 of our cousins. My mom's side of the family is very close. We all live in the same small town and see each other a lot. It'll be hard going to college after this year, but I'll still make times for special visits home and vacations with them all! : )
