Trading UP for a Nook! by Lisa Mondello

Hello from Lisa Mondello. First off, I want to send out prayers to those of you in the midwest who were hit with that devastating tornado yesterday. I hope the cleanup in quick and that you all heal soon.

Now on to my post...

After much research and debate, I finally took the plunge and got myself a Barnes and Noble Nook Color. I went back and forth on whether or not I needed the color version or if the b&w version would be fine. Well, the conclusion is that the b&w version would have been perfectly fine for reading books. But the color version is SOOOO nice. While I've never been one to need the latest and the greatest electronic gadget, I do like my creature comforts and I found the Nook filled those needs just nicely.

1. I'm a music hound. I love listening to music while I'm doing most anything. Very cool music player on this Nook.

2. I'm a note taker. For years I've carried around index cards in my purse and I have them scattered in places all over the house just in case the seed of an idea comes to me and I want to write it down for later development. The Nook has a nice notes feature. I can even download QuickOffice to edit my own work on the nook.

3. I have a busy life like most people and I can organize, make lists, set my calendar and reminders on the Nook.

4. See number 3. I'm often stuck waiting for someone to get out of school, work, the mall, etc. and I love that I can sit at a wifi spot and use the Internet. Yes, I know I can do this on my phone. But as I get older, I'm really hating that small phone screen. The Nook has a nice size screen and a keyboard. Who needs a smartphone when you have a Nook?

5. I went kicking and screaming to reading glasses. Hate them. Yes, I know I'm such a baby about it, but after a lifetime of not needing glasses, it just felt odd to me. I love that I can bump up the font on my Nook.

6. Instant gratification. I no longer have to wait to buy books at the store. Who would have thought that would be such a big deal since my house is always full of books anyway. I'm never without something new to read. But it's nice to be able to get a book right when you want it.

7. Book covers are pretty on the Nook. I would have missed that in b&w.

I'm hooked on my Nook already. I may never touch paper again.

Do you have a Nook or another ereader? Let me know how much you love it!

Many blessings, Lisa Mondello

  1. Very interesting, Lisa. I'm still standing on the diving board, my toes hanging over the edge. I'll let you know when I can decide between Nook and Kindle.

  2. I love my Kindle! I've found a bunch of free Christian fiction books, also, which is a huge plus. I always shop on Amazon, so choosing the Kindle made more sense to me.

  3. Courtney I was on the fence and may still buy a Kindle just to have an extra ereader in the house for my hubby and the kids. They're already eyeing my Nook! And yes, loving the free books!

Lyn, I'm so glad I ended up with the Nook. It's so much more than an ereader. But truthfully, the Kindle or Nook will do well for just reading books. And the Nook b&w and Kindle are much lighter than the Nook Color, but I don't mind the weight. It's only as heavy as a trade book. I love putting my own work on the nook and getting away from the computer to read through manuscripts.

  4. I still don't have one. But my son bought a Kindle. I plan to play with it a while and make a decision. I've actually downloaded books to my Mac and have found that the Amazon downloading is easier. So I'm thinking if I get one, I may do a Kindle. But I love the idea of the color and being able to get magazines! And kids picture books someday (when we--hopefully!--have grandkids). :)

  5. Courtney, I've been downloading all those free books to my Mac and hope to get a readers someday to send them to it. I just don't like reading on the computer.

  6. Lisa, I'm still on the fence. Do you know whether the Kindle has a similar notes feature?

I was absolutely sold on the NookColor until the recent announcement that Kindle will begin to allow books in ePub format. Now I'm not so sure...

  7. I have a Kindle only cos the nook is not user friendly for an aussie, meaning I cant buy books for it where as the Kindle has an international version although books like LI are not available to me for about 2 years.
I love it I can read pdfs on it and it keeps my place.

You can listen to music and you can take notes on books you are reading.

  8. So cool, Jenny! Glad you can get these books easier in Australia with the Kindle. I've heard the postage to get American paperbacks over there is a killer, which is why it takes so long. How come the LIs aren't available for 2 years?

Patricia, I'm not really sure about all that the Kindle has. My nephew got his a few months back and he loves it. And I know a few people with Kindle, but I'm not sure they're looking for the same things I was looking for. For reading the Kindle is fantastic. You can't go wrong. And I knew it was only a matter of time before they'd start opening up to other platforms. IMO, you really can't go wrong with either, that's why it took me so long to finally get one. I couldn't decide. But now that I have my Nook, I'm totally loving it!

  9. Lisa the issue is copyright I think and our draconian laws. There are other books we cant get to start with either which is a pitty. I just got an order from Christian book today so have a few more books I was wanting to read. my tbr pile is now even bigger!
One think I wish the kindle had was a back light. you cant read in the dark! I though it would be like the laptop with a screen you could read in the dark.
