Ask Elnora--About Rain?? Lenora Worth

Hello, beautiful friends. Do you hear that sound? It is wonderful. It is rain in the deep South. Elnora loves a good rainy night. We've had so few of those this summer. And it seems that with the rain, cooler weather will finally be here. Don't get me wrong. Elnora is a southern girl. I love spring and summer--lemonade and sun hats, petunias and azaleas, the smell of honeysuckle and magnolias, tea cakes and sweet tea. But ... I so appreciate fall and winter, too. I love snuggling in a soft robe on a rainy night, sipping hot chocolate and eating cookies, watching an old movie and crying all over again. I love walking through crusty leaves and sitting by a campfire near a body of water. So right now, I have on my soft Uggs and a warm sweater and I'm listening to the rain falling down outside. That got me thinking about rain songs. You know, the songs you hear that just make you stop and sigh. Such as ..." A Rainy Night in Georgia". Love me some Ray Charles. (He grew up in Georgia, you know.) Or how about "Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head" BJ Thomas ring a bell? Or "Purple Rain" by that guy who used to be named Prince? Maybe "Alabama Rain" by Jim Croce? Or maybe even "Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain"? Hank Williams, Emmylou Harris?? Even Willie Nelson? We can sing "Send down the rain, Lord." Or maybe "Holy Spirit, rain down, rain down." And then, "Lord, let your mercy rain on me." What is it about rain? Especially when you feel so parched and tired that you can't seem to find any strength to keep going? Doesn't it seem that on a soft rainy night with a crisp temperature, all you need is a warm blanket and a listening heart? Because God has sent you the perfect gift? It's as if He's saying "Just rest, my child. Listen to the rain and rest." Because as the Who song goes "Only love can make it rain. Love reign o'er me, rain on me." Let's discuss the rain. And do you have a favorite rain song? I hope so. Cause "Ain't No Sunshine When You're Gone!"

  1. No rain song from me, but girl do I love a good soaking rain... I actually like a "good" storm if no human damages are involved.

I like the renewal it all brings. Yes, there's inconvenience, the occasional mistep but that's what Life is about, isn't it?

We need to trudge through floodings (in and outside) before we mend, before we find the solace that will bring us the shinning and warm Sun again, don't we?

Wishing Elnora, Craftie Readers and fans a happy weekend and

"""“May the road rise up to meet you, may the wind be ever at your back. May the sun shine warm upon your face and the rain fall softly on your fields. And until we meet again, May God hold you in the hollow of his hand.”"""
    (Irish blessing)

  2. I always thank God for the rain. The rain is very comforting to me and does make me want to sleep. And the song that comes to my mind is, "Grace Like Rain", by Todd Agnew. (Thanks to my husband for remembering the name of the song and who sings it). God put this song in my head!

  3. No rain song but I do love rain on a tin roof. That is a song in and of itself.

    Peace, Julie

  4. I have two favorites. It's Raining Men by the Weather Girls. Great song to jam to. Then, I also like I Can See Clearly Now by Anne Murry.

We've been getting rain the past three days here in dry Arizona.

Glad you are enjoying some desert rain. It is cloudy and cool this morning. I'm wrapped in my palm tree blanket and sipping my Community coffee.

  6. I've always loved rain! I grew up in Southern Calif. and people thought I was crazy! Now I live in Oregon and I get rain all the time - I'm in heaven! My favorite rain song is "Raindrops Keep Fallin'on My Head"! Not only do I love the movie Buth Cassidy & the Sundance Kid but my best friend and I were in a talent show when we were young and we danced to that song - ah memories!

  8. Lenora, I have to say I don't look forward to cold weather. I'm busy clinging to the heat! :) We're supposed to get that rain later today along with the cool weather. So I've been eating lunch outside the last few days, soaking up the sun and enjoying the mid's 70's, which is the absolute perfect weather to me.

Having said that, I have to admit the way you described the cool rainy night made it sound SOOO appealing!! You must be a writer or something.

    hehe ;)

  10. All good songs Winnie and Valri. Missy, sorry about the cold weather. I'm sure I'll change my tune when it's colder here!! Okay my Big Daddy wondered if Ray Charles ever did a cover of "Rainy Night in Georgia"". First person to answer that wins a copy of "A Southern Reunion!!"

  11. Lenora, this may be a "stupid question" but what do you mean exactly by "a cover of Rainy Night in Georgia?" Is that a album cover or something else??? :)

  12. It means he recorded the song but was not the original artist.

  13. Elnora, we've got rain. And rain. And rain. Here in the Pacific Northwest we gets lots. Waving to Valri, another Oregonian. I actually love the rain and cold weather, perfect for sitting down to write. I hate to be stuck in doors writing when the weather is sunny and warm. Though I'm sure our rain differs from yours in the south. Isn't humid even when it rains?

  16. Ray Charles did do a version of the song so the answer is yes. But I think you are right about Brook Benton being the first to record it.

  17. Darn, I was going to say Brook Benton too. I had to be away from my computer for awhile but just got back and came quickly to put my answer in! Jackie beat me! That's what happens on a Friday night! Rats!

  22. Well I was singing raindrops keep falling on my head and then singing in the rain yesterday. But honestly I didn't like the rain as it caused alot of rain delays in the cricket which prevented my team winning yesterday.
