'Tis the Season

I'm not trying to freak anybody out, but...

I'm sure you've seen the displays going up in the stores.
Believe it or not, there are only 80 more days until Christmas.

Some people think October is too early to be putting out Christmas stuff, but I disagree. I like that it gets me thinking about the holidays. I have a lot of people to buy for at Christmas, so I like to start my shopping early.
In a perfect world, I wouldn't even set foot in a store those last two weeks leading up to Christmas. I'd forgo all the grinches out there and spend my days watching Christmas movies, baking and savoring the season.

This is the time of year when traditions come out in full force. One of my favorite traditions takes place almost as soon as Halloween is over.
Pumpkin bread.
Lots and lots of pumpkin bread. I make a huge batch that yields me a lot of small loaves. I wrap them up and freeze them to give as gifts throughout November and December.

So how do you feel about getting a head start on the holidays? Do you like to plan ahead or would prefer to wait until after Thanksgiving?

  1. Sorry, Mindy, but I'm a firm believer in each holiday in it's own time. No, Christmas shopping, decorating until after Thanksgiving. I will admit to reading Christmas books before "my Christmas season," but I'll read Christmas stories any time of the year.

  2. I understand, Jean. No decorating here until after Thanksgiving, either. The shopping, though... I gotta space that out.

I think I saw that Hallmark Channel will start showing their Christmas movies on Oct. 31. I can deal with that.

  3. Mindy, if I send you my address, will you send me some bread?

  4. LOL! Of course, I would Pamela.

It's funny, when the kids were younger I would use the loaves as teacher gifts for Thanksgiving. Now that they're older, I don't have to worry about teachers, however my kids go through these things like crazy. Every time they come over, they grab one out of the freezer to take home. A couple of them even keep count, wanting to know how many the others have had so they can make sure they get their fair share. I can see it now, by the time they're all out of the house, I'm going to have to make two big batches just to keep them happy. ;)

  5. Well, considering that where I live (Canada) Thanksgiving is less than a week away, I don't have long to wait to get started. Right now, we're decorating for a weekend wedding and it looks like God's helping out by painting the trees lovely shades of yellow and red. :D

  6. Sandra, God's handiwork always exceeds anything we humans could achieve. Congrats on the wedding. And yes, having Thanksgiving in October does change things up a bit. :)

  7. I'm all in favor of a head start when it's holiday books! ;)

Seriously, I'm so bad at planning and shopping in advance. My brain just doesn't function that way.

More power to you who can (and leave the stores less crowded for those of us who thrive on last minute!)

  8. Never too early to start Christmas. It's one of the most cheerful season which most of people around the world would celebrate. Reading Christmas book definitely help the warm atmosphere. :)

  9. Mary Cate, you know the stores won't be less crowded at the last minute. ;)

Seriously, I love online shopping. Amazon is my friend. The fact that they'll bring it to my door and I do t have to battle any kind of crowd scores bonus points with me.

  10. Evelyn, Christmas is a cheerful season. And it is a season. A season that I look forward to every year. But those Christmas books can make the season last all year long. :D

  11. I LOVE Christmas!! The lights, trees, decorations, and mostly the Nativity scenes. :)
But I do not enjoy lots of shopping, so I'm with you, Mindy, with the online shopping. Having it delivered to my door is wonderful (except when my kitties hear the delivery guy tromping up our steps they run and hide!).
    Blessings, Patti Jo

  12. Well, Patti Jo, while your kitties hide, my dogs prefer to announce the delivery man's arrival. Oy. :D
