What Makes a Great Hero?

Hi, this is Margaret Daley. Next week I will be plotting and coming up with a hero for my next Love Inspired Suspense, the second book in my Northern Lights Search and Rescue series, set in Alaska. I thought I would ask for your help on what makes a great hero, especially one in a romantic suspense.  He will be part of a search and rescue team. What should his occupation be? What are his strengths? And because he is a three dimensional character, what are his weaknesses? Is he a loner? Is he a wounded hero (emotionally)? What physical traits do you like in a hero? Use your imagination and describe your hero.

My romantic suspense from Love Inspired Suspense this month is The Baby Rescue with a hero I really enjoyed writing for the continuity series.

  1. Hi Margaret! I like heroes who are strong - maybe a little TOO strong! But have that character flaw that makes them vulnerable so they fight it! A good heroine knows how to bring it out and help them overcome it - perhaps it was a bad childhood, a bad romance gone bad or some other defining moment. I love heroes that bring a child or baby into the mix and this "tough guy" has to deal with them, even if he feels inadequate! I love the professions like fire fighter, law enforcement, military, search & rescue, etc.! As always, looking forward to your next book!

  2. Wounded heroes are my favorite. The wounds can be emotional or physical.

  4. Valri, you are a true romance reader!! Love it.
I like heroes who act tough on the outside but are really teddy bears inside. Of course the heroine has to be the one to see it and fall for him because of it.

  5. Wow tough question. could he be part of the search patrol, Not sure the title but the ones ones who get called in when someone is lost or has fallen down a cliff etc. I picture on the snow. I know they have some who patrol different areas to check for dangers and are often alone.
I like loners. I am one! but in saying that they mix well but they enjoy being alone at one with nature and can happily be on there own. I do like the ones who melt when it comes to children. Part of the reason they are happy being a loner is they have been hurt or are dealing with issues. One big one is self image or how we perceive others think of us. so on the outside look tough but inside very insecure from being told you something that was false but you believe (for me it part of it was I was fat and unloveable) his may be he would never amount to anything so he chose the most dangerous job he could to prove others wrong.

  6. Margaret,
I'm working on a new hero and love reading everyone's comments.

Valri, like that you mentioned adding a baby to the mix. Hmmmm! Big macho male who gives his heart to the little one...and his lady love.

I like protectors and wounded heroes. Guys who put women first

  7. I like the hero who seems to have lost everything but still stands proud and recovers.

Good comments Valri. The tough guy with a baby is a favorite.

And Jenny, you gotta love those loners.

  8. Pamela we loners are wonderful people, and its not so much that we dont like people we do but we can be happy on our own and often work out issues on our own. (I use to do it riding and now do it walking. you picture yourself talking to someone else and its amazing how you can work through an issue.)

  10. Love this conversation. Jenny, loners are great as a character. I've written several of them.
