WHY DO YOU BUY A BOOK?

Have you taken our poll today?

We really want to know what draws readers toward books. For me, it begins with an appealing cover but it's the first couple of pages that will make me plunk down my money. How about you? Take our poll and let us know!

  2. The cover definitely, but what setting or character is featured on the back. I am not much for cowboys, but would love medieval knight.

  9. The first thing I base my purchasing objective on is the cover....seriously. I don't know how many times I have bought books just because the cover was stunning... Once the book has been picked up off the shelf I flip it over and see if the back cover blurb is intriguing/gripping/compelling. Then it makes it to the check out counter. :)

  10. I voted but my number one reason was not on the list!

Most of the books that I buy have authors on my ‘auto-buy’ list. I’d say this is over 50% of books. This list is growing. Given there is just a finite amount of time available to read, if I am typical, then it is very important to do the extra things that convert readers into auto-buyers.

  11. I buy books on cover, back blurb and author. If I've heard an author speak or read other books by an author and like the book I'll usually buy more. I have some authors that are a must buy every time a new book comes out.

  12. Vince,
I must agree. But we forgot to include it! Oh, dear.

  13. Hi Lyn:

Not having it on the list is an opportunity. Why not have another poll.

    Ask:

What makes you put an author on your auto-buy list?

I’d like to know that myself.

  14. Nice to see we have a mans viewpoint also, My brother reads but doesnt do the computer, I think mostly I pick certain authors that I have read before and also reading back cover for little info of what is inside, also take advise of someone who has already read it and suggest it to me. thanks for the poll Lyn.

  15. Hi Lyn:

I’ve thought about it and there are two more major reasons that are not on the list.

    1. Pirce! When an author writes books in a line that cost between $3 and $5, it is easy to try a new author. But when the first book costs, $14 to $19 for trade paperbacks, the reasons for buying the book change!

    2. The Line! Some people buy the line so in a way they are selecting editors. How many Harlequin books are sold to subscribers? I see women go into Wal-Mart and within 30 seconds buy every book in a given line. For years I subscribed to the LI books (until ebooks came out). I would think it really pays to promote your line. Oh yes and then there is Heartsong. I think they are almost 100% subscription.

I think you have to think as marketers and not authors. Of course that’s easier for me. I’m a marketer. : )
