Pat Davids here, waving wildly from the wilds of Wyoming.

Yes, I'm on the road again. I can't seem to stay home this year. In the past six months I have been to Maine, Cancun, all around Kansas and now out to Thermopolis, Wy. Home of the world's largest mineral water hot springs. It's a hop, skip and a jump (by Wyoming standards) from Yellowstone. If you've never been, I say pack up the kids, throw in your fishing poles and come on out. You'll love it. However, the hot mineral water does smell bad. Once you get past that, the rest of the trip will be great.

I'm traveling with my parents, both in their eighties, and we are having a grand time. Today, I caught the biggest, most beautiful rainbow trout you have ever seen. On my first cast! Then, for the next three hours of our float down the river, I caught clump after clump of river moss. Happily, my brother and my dad did a little better. I didn't mind. The water was beautiful and so clear I could see fish scooting out of our way as we went past. We stopped near an island where the river ran on both sides in sparking ripples for several hundred yards. I told my brother, (our guide) that the water looked like it was laced with gems. He said they call it "Diamond Chop".  Choppy water that looks like diamonds. What a great description. I know I'll use it in a book some day.

Since I'm on the road again, I won't get back to check comments until later. Don't let that stop you from posting. I want to know where you spent your most memorable vacation? Disney World? Europe? Your own backyard? Share with me what you loved about it or hated about it. After all, most memorable doesn't always mean the best.
See you later.
Pat

  1. My most memorable vacation was our cross-country trek to Colorado, but I'm hoping it will become the one we're taking this summer. :)

  2. Paris. Paris. Paris. APRIL in Paris. I saw Monet's garden in bloom and was mistaken for a native. Doesn't get much better!

  3. Sandra,
That's how I feel, too. Each vacation should be one I remember most fondly. Are you heading back to Colorado?

  4. Julie,
Oh, it sounds wonderful. I'd love to see Paris. I'm heading to Europe this fall, but for a river cruise along the Rhine and a stop in Prague where my mother's family came from. Can't wait.

  5. Pat, it sounds wonderful!!! My son visited Yellowstone for a class last year (what a field trip!) and the photos are amazing.

    Diamond chop! I love that!

My favorite vacations are at the beach. Particularly the Gulf coast. Love Orange Beach, Alabama!

  6. Pat, a writer friend of mine and I went up to Jackson Hole. We were there after tourist season. We ate at little coffe shop down from our motel. I'd go to Jackson Hole just for the coffee cake.

But most memorable was my honeymoon, driving the mountains outside Colorado Springs. My husband, who was driving, pointed out what a wonderful view. These switch backs were cut straight into the mountain, so if you ran off the road, it was a straight drop. I freaked out and I grew up in Colorado.

  7. Pat, hubby and I lived in Germany and have returned a number of times. You'll love the Rhine. Castles line part of the river and are so fun to tour! We lived in Aschaffenburg, which wasn't far from there.

We visited Prague a few years ago...such an interesting city. Enjoy your trip.

I love Europe and lived in Japan as a child. Love Hawaii, but I'm with Missy...nothing's better than the Gulf Coast, especially with the family. Love the white sand and clear water. Heading there this summer, and I can't wait!

  8. Pat, you're in a part of the country that I love like crazy. Of all the trips I've taken,Yellowstone was my favorite so far. We went to Thermopolis but didn't stay because it was really pricey to swim in that stinky water. lol. I am a cool weather, mountain lover, and oh, how we loved the Tetons and the crazy, bewildering, wonderful marvels of Yellowstone.

Debby, I want to go to Prague so bad. I was raised in Prague--Oklahoma, that is, a small Czech settlement and have always wanted to visit the original.

  10. Isn't it fun to see where people like to visit? Linda, I'm with you, the water is stinky and pricey but oh it feels so wonderful. Like swiming in silk. Gotta shower afterwards, though. And the trout fishing is to die for. I've already made plans to meet my brother there next year.

As for visiting Europe, I'm really looking forward to it. Linda, I'll put you in my suitcase.

  11. Ok most memorable for all the wrong reasons was the 12 days I spent in Ontario. (sorry to Sandra and Eva).
I was going to be in the wedding for the first time in my life at the age of 44ish. I had never met the bride but we were online friends. infact 3 of the 4 bridesmaids were internet friends. One couldn't come cos of a hurricane in texas. the other one came from another part of Canada with her daughter. I went early and we were going to do some sightseeing only when i got there she was either not up to it or it was to dear. i did see the falls and Toronto but in Toronto about 2 and a half hours at the ice hockey hall of fame (now I know nothing about Ice Hockey) and then I was allowed 20 mins to go up the cn tower. and that was Toronto. I also saw to many shoe shops! If I could take it back I would spend 5 days for the wedding and the other 7 days with other friends. Why it annoyed me was the fact I came from australia and in 12 days saw very little after planning to do so much. i gave up seeing a few other friends to spend the time with them. So it was quite memorable for the wrong reasons. (add the face I got a cold that was one of the nastiest I had had in years).

The first part of the trip was memorable for all the right reasons. I stayed with a friend who was unwell but I did go to Whistler and it was beautiful weather and the top of the mountain well words do not express the beauty. I was like WOW and could hardly believe how beautiful it was. on the chair lift it was silent but a wonderful peaceful silence. It out of this world.

  12. I can't pick just one. I've been so fortunate to go on many memorable trips. So I will pick the longest vacation. When my daughters were 13 & 14, I drove with them cross-country. We lived near Boston, at the time, and we drove all the way to the west coast. We stopped along the way to visit friends & relatives, in Ohio, Illinois, South Dakota, Montana and Washington State. We saw some fantastic scenery and visited places like the Corn Palace in Mitchell, SD., the SD Badlands, The Black Hills, including Mt. Rushmore, Crazy Horse & the Needles Highway. We stopped at the Battle of the Little Big Horn Monument. We saw these things on our way out. We met my husband in Spokane, WA, then continued on to see Mt. Ranier, Mt. St. Helen's and Olympic National Park, then traveled into Canada to Victoria and Vancouver. On our return we went to Yellowstone and through a gorgeous part of Wyoming. It took us nearly a month. My kids still jokingly remind me of how I dragged them away from their friends for a whole month one summer, but they still talk about that trip.
