RITA ENTRY - A LOVE NOTE FROM GOD

Linda Goodnight here with an unusual RITA story I think will touch your heart.

Last fall when the RITA contest opened for entries, my family suffered the most terrible time of our lives. First, my son was diagnosed with “untreatable, incurable” stage four cancer. A few weeks later my brother, worried about his sister and nephew, decided to drive to my house for Thanksgiving. Two hours out of Atlanta, he died in a car accident. My sister-in-law was critically injured.

Needless to say, the last thing on my mind was entering a contest. By the time I remembered, the contest had closed. So I signed on to judge the inspirational category instead.

Fast forward and a packet of books arrived for judging but none were inspirational. I emailed RWA and mentioned that I’d still be willing to judge inspies if needed. Within five minutes, my phone rang. Carol of RWA explained that I could not judge the category because I was entered.

Shock ran through me, followed by tears as she told this story. A Love Inspired author who remains anonymous knew about my personal heartache. That precious sister in Christ contacted RWA and did the most incredibly unselfish thing. She withdrew HER beautiful book from the contest and replaced it with mine. Then she purchased the five required copies of THE CHRISTMAS CHILD and mailed them in to RWA. Entering the RITA is expensive. Books and shipping aren’t cheap. But this amazing woman chose to give up her slot, her money, and her opportunity to bless a hurting sister.

When the RITA calls went out in March and I learned that THE CHRISTMAS CHILD had finaled, I cried most of the day. I’m crying still as I tell the story. Not just because my book was a finalist. Of course I’m delighted, but the final itself seems less important at this point. Rather, I weep with joy for the gift of love and compassion someone gave at the time I needed it most.

God works in the most wonderful ways through his amazing people.

Say Hello to Linda Goodnight

We've interviewed Sophie from The Christmas Child, so now we're going to ask the author a few questions. Say Hi to Linda Goodnight!
Thanks for being here today Linda. We'd love to know:
How long did it take you to write this book?
Roughly 3-4 months from inception to completion.
How did it get the title?
A lot of thought went into this particular title. I wanted something that fit the story but that also hinted at the real reason for Christmas. I saw the parallel between the child with no home and the Savior with no place to be born. And of course, I love Christmas in the title of any book so THE CHRISTMAS CHILD became the title. What do you think? Did I capture the feel of the first Christmas, along with the story of little lost Davey?
As an aside, my first title choice was "A Silent Christmas", again to connect the mute boy with the hymn "Silent Night", but my editors thought it sounded too suspensy! Do you agree?
We've interview the character from

What number book is this for you?
Oh my. I'm not even sure. Maybe around 37 or 38, including novellas?

What are you working on now?
Believe it or not, I'm working on another Christmas story! This will be a novella anthology with Lissa Manley for publication Christmas, 2012 set in the fictional Rocky mountain, snow-covered Christmas town of Snowglobe, Montana. The probably anthology title is A SNOWGLOBE CHRISTMAS. I'm playing Christmas music on my computer to get in the mood. Any suggestions?

Thank you Linda for answering our questions. I would suggest Celine Dions Christmas Album. Its beautiful.

Featured Book:The Christmas Child by Linda Goodnight

How exciting to have the heroine from THE CHRISTMAS CHILD written by Linda Goodnight an October, 2011 release from Love Inspired Romance .

1. Sophie Bartholomew, tell me the most interesting thing about you.

I’m just an ordinary person, a teacher, a small town girl who loves life, God, and people. Sorry, I’m not all that interesting. But something interesting, and rather heartrending, did happen to me the other day. Some friends and I found a scared little boy in a trash Dumpster! Isn’t that awful?

2. What do you do for fun?

Christmas and cookies are my two absolute most favorite things. Well, those and kids. My fifth grade students bake and sell Christmas cookies every year for charity. Being a total Christmas nut, I have a blast with this. I also hang out with friends and spend time with my terrific dad. Since I’m on just about every civic, school, and church committee known to man—all of which I love doing--I stay pretty busy.

3. What do you put off doing because you dread it?

Calling or visiting my mother and her husband. I just don’t fit in with her new family, a fact that makes me sad and uncomfortable.

4. What are you afraid of most in life?

Right now, my biggest fear is for Davey, the little boy we found. I’m afraid of what’s happened to him and of why he won’t talk. I’m afraid of what Kade McKendrick will discover in his investigation.

5. What is the most important thing to you?

If I say, “my faith”, that will sound too clichéd, but it’s true.

6. Do you read books? If so, what is your favorite type of book?

I’m a teacher. I love to read! Mostly, I read children’s literature for my students but I also love cozy, romantic historicals and sappy Christmas books. My hometown is a beautiful old 19th century town and I really enjoy reading about that time period.

7. If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?

All in all, I’m a content, happy woman. My life is good. But I guess if I could change one thing, I’d try to have feelings for the man who’s interested in me instead of for the aloof new guy in town.

8. Do you have a pet? If so, what is it and why that pet?

No, I don’t, but a friend of mine, Kade McKendrick (who is oo-la-la cute, but so, so cynical) has the sweetest golden retriever. Her name is Sheba and she absolutely adores kids, especially a voiceless little boy named Davey.

9. If you could travel back in time, where would you go and why?

Kade is harboring some sort of big, ugly heartache. I wish I could go back in time and stop it from happening. I wish I could mend his brokenness.
