Raising Children to Love Reading

By day, I’m an early childhood educator in my in-home family childcare program. Currently, I teach 5 children, ages 1 to 4 ½. Our days are filled with many educational, hands-on activities to help them to develop and grow.

One of our favorite daily activities is reading. I have shelves and baskets of books. I have boxes of books tucked away because there’s no room for them. I have books stacked in totes to use with specific lessons.

We have our morning reading time after our circle time. During that time, we read books that are specific to our learning theme for that month. Then, once we finish lunch and settle down for naptime, we read different books that help us to learn empathy, manners, imagination, or just plain how to have fun. Once naptime ends, we have quiet reading time while I prepare their snack.

Books have been a mainstay in my house for as long as I can remember. One of my earliest memories as a child is my mom reading us Bible stories before bed. Those planted seeds encouraged me to grow in God’s love and grace and helped me to love reading. I loved Nancy Drew mysteries, most everything written by the beloved Beverly Cleary, tween angsty books by Judy Blume, and then First Love by Silhouette novels when I was a teen.

Because of one particular book, I became a writer. Without that lifelong love of reading, I may have chosen a different career path. Granted, that particular book may not have been appropriate for a sixteen-year-old girl, but it sparked a passion to create the same happily ever after heart sigh I experienced upon completing that novel.

When my husband and I learned we were pregnant with our first child, one of our baby purchases was a set of children’s books. I read to my boys when they were infants.

When our oldest was a toddler, he didn’t have a favorite blanket or stuffed animal at bedtime—he chose books. He grabbed a few board books and climbed into his big boy bed. His love of reading continued through school where he won reading awards and participated in programs like Battle of the Books.

Our youngest son loved being read to, but in his early elementary years, we learned he had a reading comprehension issue. Thankfully, he had gentle reading specialists who encouraged him to overcome that difficulty. In third grade, he read his first book from cover to cover—Harry Potter and The Sorcerer’s Stone. In addition to being well written, that series will always stay close to my heart because it enabled my son to do something he hadn’t done before—escape into the pages of a novel and understand what he was reading.

Raising children to love reading begins from early childhood. Studies have proven many benefits to reading to children including improved receptive and expressive language—the words they understand and the words they speak, positive bonding experiences with caregivers, calming to a child’s active body, improved thinking skills, etc. The list of benefits is too long to list in this post, but I think you get the idea.

Most county libraries have awesome reading programs for children. Many early education programs offer free books to families. Different communities participate in book programs. Books make great gifts for birthdays and holidays. Dollar stores offer great books at low prices.

Reading opens doors to a child’s imagination and invites him on a journey that will encourage positive development and growth for the rest of his life.

Your Turn: What was your favorite book as a child? What is your favorite childhood reading memory? How has reading to your children or a child you know impacted him or her?

SLOWING DOWN

I’m currently writing this blog post from my bed, with a heating pad on the bulging disc at the bottom of my spine. I’ve had bronchitis for over a month now and I coughed my way into some serious back pain. I’m on painkillers, a muscle relaxer and a steroid, so hopefully my post won’t come out too terribly jumbled.

This enforced bed rest makes me crazy, but I think it may be God’s way of slowing me down. I am not someone who lets physical ailments get in the way of what I have to do or I wouldn’t get anything done, especially since I have a couple of chronic illnesses. But this spine problem slam-dunked me. I can’t ignore it, since standing and sitting currently requires a second person to leverage me up. I hate it when that happens, but I know the good Lord has it all in His hands.

One of the attributes an author, as well as all those who work-at-home, is the ability to self-motivate. That book is not going to write itself. My problem isn’t so much being able to push myself, but knowing when to stop and smell the roses. Writing is kind of a twenty-four hour a day job. I am always thinking about my novel and even dreaming about it.

But I don’t want to be that wife, mom or granny who can’t set aside my laptop to love on my Boo and Busy Bee, or to share a recipe with my three adult daughters, or to stop and listen to my dear hubby talk about his day.

There are times, of course, that I have to put up the “Do Not Disturb” sign and push through, tight deadlines that keep me up half the night and have my family calling for pizza if they want to eat. Probably more often than it ought to happen. Sometimes I’ve ignored what my body is telling me and I end up sick for a long time—like that bronchitis I mentioned.

One way I’ve found to slow down is keeping the Sabbath. On Sundays, I don’t have to worry about anything except worshipping God, spending time with my family and getting some rest. It’s the only day I give myself permission to relax. It is, after all, God’s idea. I also start and end every day with prayer.

I would love to hear how you get away from the madness of ordinary life. How do you relax and turn your mind back on the Lord?

The Dance

A couple of years ago, my oldest granddaughter was certain she wanted to be a dancer when she grew up after she watched the children’s show, Angelina Ballerina.

Unfortunately, for the dancing world that has since changed.

I was about my granddaughter’s age when I read my first Nancy Drew mystery and knew that I wanted to create stories when I grew up. That was it. Career settled. Life put into place.

If only it were that easy. Fast forward six years and then I discovered Phyllis Whitney and Victoria Holt and became hooked on the romantic suspense genre.

I had no idea when I decided to write that I was about to embark on the dance of a lifetime.

Just like dancing, writing requires a lot of discipline and training.

First, you must learn the proper steps: There is nothing scarier than sitting in front of a blank computer screen for the first time and trying to write…something. It’s a huge leap to go from reading inspirational romantic suspense to actually writing it. When I wrote my first story, I had no idea all the intricate steps involved in creating a suspense story, but I wrote, I read about my craft, and I found a great network of seasoned authors who willingly shared their knowledge.

Practice, Practice, Practice: It you don’t use it you lose it. In other words, to improve as a dancer or a writer, you have to work through all the self-doubt and times when life gets in the way.

In the beginning, writing was a trial and error experience for me. I confess I tried other genres in the process before I came back to my first love, inspirational romantic suspense. Some wise author once told me, write what you enjoy reading and then perfect it. In other words, if you don’t read contemporary romance, then don’t try to write it.

Submitting a manuscript the first time can be a frightening experience. After you’ve polished and perfected your baby, it’s time to send it out into the world and let it stand on its own. And that’s just the beginning. You wait and wait until one day you receive news about your baby. Only it’s not what you were hoping. The dreaded rejection letter arrives and it feels as if someone slugged you in the stomach hard. This wasn’t what I expected. To quote my granddaughter, “Now what”? Well, some rejection letters are form letters. Those you file away. Others have comments from the editor who reviewed it. Those you can gain little pearls of wisdom to help you along your way…but you have to put aside your hurt feelings and listen. You can’t take it personal. Publishing is a business. A very hard one at that.

It’s finally Showtime! What do you mean I’ll be dancing by myself?

For me, ten years of writing came down to five minutes in the spotlight. In 2012, I entered the Speed Dating Contest that editor Emily Rodmell hosted and I was one of the lucky ones who got an appointment to chat with Emily. On the day of the pitch, I was on vacation in Colorado. At our cabin, internet service is nonexistent. I could have given up and said, well, that’s it, better luck next time, but I didn’t. My husband and I drove into the small town of Pagosa Springs where I did the entire chat on my laptop in the parking lot of the Ace Hardware Store.

Emily was kind enough to request a synopsis although I was so nervous she probably didn’t understand anything I told her. I promptly sent the synopsis out to her. Then she requested the first three chapters followed by the full manuscript. With each request, I tried not to get my hopes up.

In December 2012, Emily called. To this day, I can’t tell you what she said to me other than that she wanted to buy FORGOTTEN PAST for Love Inspired Suspense. It was a surreal moment. One that still hasn’t fully sunken in yet. It's a great feeling to have your dream become a reality and even greater to hold your book in your hands.

A Second Dance. If you’re an author, getting a second book published is almost as hard as selling for the first time. It takes a lot of hard work and perseverance. After some wonderful lessons learned during the editing process of FORGOTTEN PAST I was able to sell three more books to Love Inspired Romance including my February 2016 release, Rocky Mountain Pursuit. I’m looking forward to what the future hold while remembering the dance that got me here.

To quote Garth Brooks’ famous song, The Dance, “I could have missed the pain, but I'd have had to miss the dance”.

And what a dance it is.

What about you? What dream are you dancing to obtain? Whether it is becoming a published author or something else, I’d love to hear how you’ve overcome the obstacles along the way to your Showtime?

All the best...

FEATURED BOOK AND INTERVIEW: The Cowboy's Twins by Deb Kastner

A Surprise Dad
Rancher Jax McKenna's gotten used to being on his own. Then surprise twin babies—daughters he never knew existed—arrive on his doorstep, and his world goes topsy-turvy. Strong, silent Jax has a way with horses. Not little girls! So when Texas newcomer Faith Duggan steps up to help, he's overwhelmed with gratitude. Faith's following her dream of buying a mustang rescue sanctuary. And she needs Jax, too. But after a tragic accident changed his life forever, Jax isn't used to letting anyone in. Could Faith be the exception…and the partner he's always searched for?

Interview:
How exciting to have Faith Duggan, the heroine from The Cowboy’s Twin, written by Deb Kastner, a May 2016 release from Love Inspired Romance.

1.     Faith, tell me the most interesting thing about you.
I have always had a heart for the plight of wild mustangs, which are being rounded up and slaughtered because they take up too much public land. I bought a ranch to use as a mustang rescue and sanctuary, but it’s really run down. I’m going to need a lot of help to fix it up. I won Jax McKenna in a bachelor auction so he’s supposed to help me.
2.     What do you do for fun?
Anything I do with my horses is fun. They are my life.
3.     What do you put off doing because you dread it?
I’ll be sad when Jax has finished his work. Despite desperately trying to guard my heart, I have really enjoyed the time I’ve spent with Jax, his mother and his adorable baby girls.
4.     What are you afraid of most in life?
That I’ll make the same mistake in a relationship as I did the last time. Even though I knew better, I stayed around much longer than I should have, and then lost everything that was dear to me. I won’t do that again.
5.     What is the most important thing to you?
Right now? Establishing my mustang sanctuary. These horses count on me. Jax’s baby twins have won over my heart, as well.
6.     Do you read books? If so, what is your favorite type of book?
Ever since I was a child I’ve read every book about horses I could get my hands on, fiction and non-fiction alike. But right now I don’t have any time for reading, and I’m too exhausted even if there was time.
7.     If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?
My gullible nature. I choose to see what is best in people. Sometimes it’s a blessing, but sometimes it’s a curse and I’ve been badly heartbroken because of it.
8.     Do you have a pet? If so, what is it and why that pet?
No pets. Just my beautiful herd of horses.
9.     If you could travel back in time, where would you go and why?
I would go back to the beginning of my last relationship and bypass it altogether. I should have seen the signs and not stayed in that toxic environment.

My month of meeting readers--Lenora Worth :)

Hello and happy first Friday! Hope everyone had a lovely Cinco de Mayo. April went by quickly for me since I had two major trips and a move from our townhouse to a new house and of course, deadlines. I think I might have missed spring. But I've had some good times. After I had fun at the Romantic Times Convention in Las Vegas, we traveled up to Georgia for a funeral. All of my brothers have gone to heaven and it's sad to think about that. But a week after that, Big D and I headed to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, for the Barbara Vey Reader Appreciation Weekend. This was the fifth anniversary and we had lots of events planned. My first time there, so I had to learn the ropes, so to speak.

Winnie Griggs, that adventurous rebel, got me involved. We did a pre-conference bingo game that brought in two-hundred and fifty winners. I posted some pictures on another blog but I'm posting a few of them here, too. I attended these two back to back events because early on, I made a resolution to connect with readers more this year. I sure have done that. Our readers are so loyal and supportive and giving and lovely. I appreciate them so much. They made the lack of sleep and the constant sore muscles from smiling so worth it!

So here are some pictures for you to enjoy! Oh, and I'm excited about my May release--Truth and Consequences. I have a quote from that book for you, too. This story was challenging but I loved the characters and my K-9 officer dog Hunter. :)

Here I am with Liz Talley. She's a true southern girl and she has a new book out right now titled Charmingly Yours.

Here I am with my table guests. Standing Kathryn Seitz, Beth Sternhagen, Suzi Zimmerman, me, Renata Canino, Stacy Thoreson. Sitting: Stephanie Moran and Dee Ann Fugate.

My table had a beach theme. It was fun to decorate and then have a nice long chat with readers. We had a signing later that was fast and furious and crowded and then some more fun events. Winnie and I had breakfast with four wonderful readers on Sunday morning, too. All in all a nice weekend even if it was too cold for my southern blood.

My next reader adventure will be at the Heart of Dixie Reader Luncheon in Huntsville, Alabama in June. I'm looking forward to that one, too.

Readers, we love you and we enjoy hearing from you. Some days can be very discouraging but a cheerful word from a reader friend always brightens even the worst day! Thank you so much!

This is our goody table at the Bingo game. Winnie and Liz Talley had some cool gifts and the rest of us contributed door prizes.

Here's a quote from my May release:

Patricia Johns: A Better Behaved Woman

There is a Marilyn Monroe quote that drives me crazy:

It dislike this sentiment so much because it suggests that bad behavior is "worth it" in order to get the sweet times. I couldn't disagree more--and that might sound callous, because I do understand the underlying plea... Underneath Marilyn's false bravado, under the swagger, there is something deeply sad: an unmet desire to be loved.

We all just want to be loved: by parents, by siblings, by friends, by a partner. No matter how wealthy or famous, that search for love is the same. Love me--even when I'm hard to love.

But is that too much to ask of a man?

I'm married, but that love is based on my behavior, too. If I started cheating, started hurting him, I could break that relationship irreparably. It would be possible to push him away. I can't just say, "Put up with my garbage, or you don't deserve my good times." That isn't fair to him. Nor would it be very mature of me. He loves me heart and soul, but maintaining a marriage is practical, too. He might still love me, but if I continually behaved badly, he might not be able to stay with me. It would be too much to ask.

If I'm looking for Someone to stick by me no matter what, I need to look higher. God loves me at my worst, and not because I'm so fabulous at my best, either. He is the One I can trust to love me as I am and not give up on me. And with that basic need met--being loved at my worst, treasured even when I'm hardest to be with--it makes me into a stronger woman, a better woman, a better behaved woman.

Because, at the end of the day, behavior still matters.

What does it take to make a relationship work? Christian or secular, everyone is searching for same answers. I've found my answer in the One who created my heart.

I write for three different lines in Harlequin--Love Inspired, American Romance and Heartwarming--and you'll see the Christian values I live by in all of them. This month, HER STUBBORN COWBOY is on the shelves, and I hope you'll check it out!

If you'd like to see more of my work, come by my blog! You can also find me on Facebook, where I'm always thrilled to connect with my readers.
