Interview with the heroine, Abigail, from A Ring and a Promise by Lois Richer:
1. What do you do for fun? FUN?
WHO HAS TIME FOR FUN? I CAN BARELY GET MY JEWELRY DESIGNING WORK DONE AND TAKE CARE OF MY PARENTS. THEY’VE MOVED INTO A NEW PLACE BECAUSE MY DAD HAS ALZHEIMER’S AND MY MOM WANTED A SMALLER PLACE. IF I HAD TIME, THOUGH, I’D LOVE TO LEARN HOW TO SAIL. I LOVE THE WATER.
2. What do you put off doing because you dread it?
I PUT OFF BEING AROUND DONOVAN WOODWARD. HE PROMISED TO MARRY ME FIVE YEARS AGO AND THEN HE JUST WALKED AWAY. I NEVER HEARD A WORD FROM HIM. THEN, A FEW DAYS AGO, HE SHOWED UP WITH A GODCHILD IN TOW, ACTING AS IF WE’RE GREAT FRIENDS.
3. What are you afraid of most in life?
I’M AFRAID I’LL NEVER FIND SOMEONE WHO THINKS I’M ENOUGH JUST AS I AM. EVERYONE IS ALWAYS TRYING TO CHANGE ME. MY PARENTS THINK MY WORK AS A JEWELRY DESIGNER ISN’T AS GOOD AS THEIR SCIENTIFIC WORK. DONOVAN MUST HAVE THOUGHT I WASN’T FUN ENOUGH.
4. What do you want out of life?
A HOME OF MY OWN, A FAMILY I CAN LOVE.
5. What is the most important thing to you?
TO PROVE THAT I AM GOOD ENOUGH AT MY WORK TO BE AMONG THE BEST IN THE FIELD.
6. Do you read? If so, what is your favorite type of book to read?
I READ AS MUCH AS I CAN. I LOVE FAMILY SAGAS, THE HISTORICAL ONES THAT FOLLOW ALL THE FAMILY. MAYBE THAT’S BECAUSE I’M AN ONLY CHILD AND I WAS ALWAYS LONELY.
7. If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?
I WISH I WAS MORE EXTROVERTED. I LIKE PEOPLE. THAT’S NOT IT. BUT I CAN’T SEEM TO RELAX AROUND THEM. I FEEL LIKE I’M ALWAYS BEING JUDGED.
8. Do you have a pet? If so, what is it and why that pet?
I DON’T HAVE A PET, BUT I’D LIKE A DOG, A NICE BIG COLLIE. DOGS ACCEPT YOU THE WAY YOU ARE. THEY DON’T CARE ABOUT THE SAME SILLY THINGS PEOPLE DO.
9. If you could travel back in time, where would you go and why?
I’D GO BACK TO THE 1800’S. I’D BE ONE OF THOSE WOMEN JANE AUSTEN WROTE ABOUT—STRONG ENOUGH TO SPEAK MY OPINION AND HOLD OUT FOR WHAT I WANT.
