It's My Anniversary. Let's Give Away Some Books!

As much as I love beautiful weddings, I didn't have one. No cake.  No dress. No church. No guests. Nothing but the man and a ring. Oh, and a bottle of Dr. Pepper!  I guess you could say we eloped.  Forty years later on this beautiful fall day, we are celebrating a milestone anniversary. Same man, same ring, and lots of miles filled with laughter and tears, and always love and faith. Think he'll buy me another Dr. Pepper?

Now, let's celebrate in style by giving away some books.  WE HAVE A WINNER! (I feel so powerful when I type that.)  Drawn from last Thursday's comments and the winner of some wonderful Love Inspired books is.... Paula O!

More books! I'm excited to be paired with the fantabulous Debbie Macomber in a re-release of The Gift of Christmas , available for pre-order now and scheduled to hit stores Oct. 29. No wedding in it but lots of Christmas to get you in the spirit.

So grab a Dr. Pepper and celebrate with me today.

Did you have a wedding? Where? What's your favorite wedding memory? Or favorite wedding scene in a book or movie?

(Comment and be entered into next week's book drawing!!)

  1. 56 years ago, we were married on a daily TV program called Bride & Groom! It was quite exciting to be chosen...and us Georgians fly to NYC.
Some of the weddings were "live", but ours was taped ..so we got to view it on a black/white TV about a month later!!

  2. My husband and I eloped. The best decision for us. We went to a small church and had the minister there marry us. We then invited all of our family out to eat that evening to tell them. Best way to go! And cheap too! :)

  3. Jackie, that is the coolest story ever! Getting married on TV. Well at least you would have a video of it. How cool!

  4. Amy, I'm with you. Money was definitely part of our decision at the time and so we eloped. It was a good idea to have all of your family come out to celebrate and that made it special. I think my only regret about our day was that we were not married by a preacher. That would have made it better. But God has blessed it 1 million times over even if we were young and foolish at the time.

  6. never been married. I remember my first wedding I was about 10 or 11 I went instead of dad with mum and it was like a fairytail for me. There is a photo of me holding the confetti top throw and looking so excited. It was so much fun. Another I remember was mum and dad went to the wedding and i stayed with friends who live over the road. We were watching and the groom was really short like maybe 5 feet 4 if that well they turned him upside down and put confetti down his legs.

  7. What a cool post, Linda! Like Heidi, I too was married in a LDS temple but mine was a lot longer ago - 28 years! Mine was in the Los Angeles Temple! Way to go, Heidi! I also had all my friends and family there, for the most part. I guess you never get everyone there but I had all the important ones there! Even my uncle came from Arizona who had stage 4 cancer and was so weak but loved me enough to come that he wasn't going to miss it. He died a week later. I've never forgotten that. It means so much to me. Three kids and one grandchild later, my husband and I are still going strong! Lots of bumps in the road due to my health issues but we love each other so much! Congrats on your anniversary!

  10. Jenny, I am laughing at the image of the short groom being turned upside down! That's hysterically funny. Thank you for giving me a laugh today.

  11. Valri, The fact that your uncle could make it for your wedding is such a beautiful memory. Thank you for sharing that. And congratulations on 28 years. I hope all the health issues are taken care of now that everyone is fine.

  12. Connie, he was truly a brave man. I married into children as well and it was quite a journey at the beginning. Now I wouldn't take for my stepchildren. They are such a blessing to me but I sure was green in the beginning. Ha ha

  13. Linda, happy anniversary. Such fun reading all the wedding memories. We still laugh at our wedding photos. We got married in the 70's when the tuxedos came in a rainbow of colors. Ours were maroon. We were married on Valentine's Day and had our reception in Loveland, Ohio.

  14. Washington DC thirty years ago. 110 degrees. 100% humidity. NO AC.

One of the groomsman sweated through his tux so bad they had to burn his tux.

But we lived through that and celebrate it and AC every summer!

    Peace, Julie

  16. Meririllee,

Maroon doesn't sound so bad compared to the crazy fashion I remember from the 70s. Gene and I have pictures of us in our bellbottoms and paisley. Lol

  17. Oh Julie! 100 degrees is killer. I remember the days of no AC. But I don't remember them fondly. Ha ha

  18. Paula, congrats on winning the books. I'm still smiling about your husband getting a perm for the wedding. Now that's a memory to last a lifetime. Gotta love a man like that!

  20. We have been married 34 years! We had a beautiful church wedding! My boyfriend(later husband) was a commercial salmon fisherman and went to Alaska to fish during the summer months. When he left for the summer before we were married, a mutual friend of ours called me up and asked me out on a date. My future hubs had just left that morning. I couldn't believe it! We weren't officially engaged, but everyone knew we were together forever. This obviously was upsetting to my future hubs :) At the end of the summer when he got home, he went to chat with our friend. He told him he would be invited to the wedding, but when he came through the reception line, he could only shake my hand and not give me a hug. He told the guy that he would hit him if he hugged me. Well fortunately the guy just shook my hand, but my hubs had his fist balled up ready to hit him when he came through!!! It's a weird wedding memory, but certainly one I will never forget! LOL!

  21. I just posted about my wedding "happening" on Facebook yesterday, because it was my 38th wedding anniversary. Being on a tight budget and not too sentimental, I decided to rent my wedding dress. About 45 minutes before my wedding, Mom decided to press it again. This time the iron was a wee bit hot, and she burned the impression of the iron into the front of my gown. There was no black, just ugly puckers all around the shape of an iron. I was devastated, as was my mom. But it turned out fine, because I was able to hold my bouquet a bit lower and hide the imprint. I was sooooo glad that i was about to leave on my honeymoon while Mom had to return the dress. We didn't have to pay for it since it was insured, but we didn't get our deposit back.
    Happy anniversary!!

  22. Julie, you and Dave have such a cool history anyway with the Alaska connection, but thinking about Dave in the reception line with his fist ready to punch makes me smile. I can actually see Dave doing that!

  23. Vickie, oh my gosh! Your poor mom. She must have been sick at heart. And you're pretty smart for putting the bouquet over the spot. I wonder how much extra they charged at the rental place because of the scorch mark.

  24. My husband and I were married in 1985, 27 years plus some days ago. We were married in a chapel across the street from the state capitol where yellow daffodils were in bloom that matched the roses in my bride's bouquet. Now all these years later our son lives in Texas and I was able to visit and get some beautiful photos of the yellow roses there.
