My Lady Valentine - part 10
Lacy Williams here with today's installment:
“…what does a man say to the man he believes he killed?”
“Only that I would be willing to do it again. A lady’s honor must be upheld.”
Whether it was his sister or Lady Elizabeth.
Drake held his sword loosely, its weight familiar in his hand. In this crowded hall with guests milling—and many watching the tableau unfold with wide eyes—he could not swing it without risking endangering those around.
Had his blunt words upset Lady Elizabeth?
He dared to look away from the viscount to glance down on her. Where he had expected a scowl, like the one she’d bestowed on him so easily earlier, he witnessed the fine tremble pass Lady Elizabeth’s lips.
She was frightened.
Before this moment, he’d believed she might be glad at the reappearance of her betrothed. But it seemed she knew of the viscount’s rumored cruelty.
And after spending most of the day with her helping finalize Lady Jane’s plans for the festival, he knew he couldn’t walk away and leave her to the viscount’s machinations.
If this man was the viscount. He hadn’t recognized Drake or Lady Elizabeth until his companion had identified them.
Nicholas glared, his gaze flicking between Drake and Lady Elizabeth. Now that Drake knew Elizabeth had no desire for the match, he must do something.
“I was promised this dance,” he said as the music swirled above the noise of the crowd.
He sheathed his sword and swept Elizabeth into the crowd, leaving Nicholas behind. Instead of moving into the dance patterns, he guided her across the floor to the opposite side of the hall and into a shadowed alcove that afforded some privacy.
He hadn’t meant to literally sweep her away but realized his hands rested at her hips and they stood too close for propriety’s sake.
And he wanted her closer.
Her soft breaths warmed his chin. Only the smallest of spaces separated them. He could easily close the distance and kiss her parted lips…
Which was why he forced himself to release her.
“Your brother should be here protecting you.” His words emerged sharper than he’d intended, maybe as protection to himself. But seeing her uncertain made him want things he couldn’t afford to want.
And her chin came up, that fierce, familiar scowl reappearing along with her backbone. “I can protect myself.”
Perhaps not.
“My man is looking into the viscount’s presence here.” And whether the viscount was truly who he claimed to be. “Something isn’t right with his sudden appearance. Where has he been these past years?” And why hadn’t he recognized Drake?
She looked past him, out to where the assembled crowd still danced and made merry. “Mayhap my aunt knows something. Her episode came on when she learned of his presence. I’ll seek her counsel in the morn.”
But until then, who would watch over Elizabeth?

It was a Dark and Stormy Night--Halloween Serial Chapter Six by Missy Tippens

Ellie bit back a gasp. He lives here. This is his party. He's probably not a crazy killer.
The mantra didn't do much to reassure her as she looked at the uninhabited hearse.
At least she hoped it was uninhabited. "Um, yeah. That's unusual all right."
"It was supposed to be parked out front, a prop for the party. But I'm late and need to get inside to greet my guests." JT picked up Mina, the bat cat. "Ready to go?"
"Gladly." Anything to get out of this dark garage. As she stuffed her weapon, aka her shoe, back inside her handbag, thunder once again rattled the door.
He turned off the hearse with some kind of remote control. Then he shined the flashlight to lead the way inside. They stepped into what appeared to be a long hallway. When he set down Mina, she scurried away, her tiny costume wings flapping.

"It's pitch dark in here, too," Ellie said, wondering why in the world she'd risked life, limb and Louboutins to come to a silly party on such a stormy night.
He sighed. "I hope my housekeeper has lit candles. Otherwise I'm afraid everyone will be scared." He stopped, and she nearly bumped into him. Turning toward her, he pointed the flashlight at their feet, creating a dimly-lit circle with them inside . "You have to admit, this house is a bit creepy."
His nearness took her breath away and made thinking clearly difficult. "It is with you in that cape and horrifying mask."
With a deep chuckle, JT lifted the mask to the top of his head. "I'm sorry if I've frightened you. I tend to get carried away when I throw a party."
She looked up into his eyes, half scared of what she'd see there. But even in the shadows, his beautiful brown eyes sparkled with humor.
Her tension eased, but just a fraction. Because a single man this handsome was a danger in itself. A danger to her heart. "Yeah. You had me going with the whole 'You can call me Norman' thing. How about if I just call you JT?"
"For you, Ellie, anything." With a heart-stopping grin, he slid his mask back in place. Then he stretched out his gloved hand. "Will you join me in welcoming our guests?"
Our guests? She swallowed. Hesitated. Then, against the voice in her head shouting turn around and run home!, she placed her hand in his.

It Was a Dark and Stormy Night - Halloween Serial Chapter Two by Teri Wilson

“Oh.”
Ellie glanced at the foreboding mansion at the top of the hill and really
wished it didn’t look so much like the house in the movie Psycho. “Actually, yes. I’m going to the party.”
“Super.
Climb on in.” Mr. Tall, Dark, and Handsome grinned. At least she assumed he was
tall. It was kind of hard to tell since he was behind the wheel of a fancy
sports car. But he wasn’t giving off a Norman Bates vibe, and for now, that
would have to be good enough. Her Louboutins weren’t going to fix themselves.
“Thank
you,” she said, folding herself into the passenger seat.
“You’re
welcome.” His grin widened, revealing a most charming set of dimples, and he
shifted the car into drive.
Ellie
tried not to stare. She really did. But now that she’d gotten a closer look at
him, she couldn’t help but notice how very much he looked like Ryan Gosling.
That had to be a good sign, right?
She
swallowed and aimed her gaze out the windshield. The storm had really picked
up. Rain pounded against the glass, and the trees outside bent sideways in the
wind. Trick-or-treaters went scurrying for cover. By the time they crested the
hill, the rain-slicked sidewalks were deserted.
A chill
snaked its way up Ellie’s spine. She’d be glad once she was safe inside the
grand house and out of this eerie weather.
But when
the car reached the sweeping, circular drive, it didn’t stop. Ellie pressed her
palm against the window and cast a longing glance at the mansion.
Don’t
panic. He lives here. He’s probably taking you to a separate, private entrance.
She forced
her lips into a brave smile. “Thank you again for the ride, Mr…um…I’m sorry, I
don’t think I caught your name.”
He arched
a brow and gave her a sideways glance that sent butterflies swarming in her
belly. “You can call me Norman.”

Finale of Her Secret Valentine--What's Nancy to do?
"Ya'll can stop this right now," a strong male voice came from behind Nancy. "This is just a joke on Nancy and it's in poor taste too."
Who was it? She turned but before she could take off her blindfold. Two hands, large strong ones pressed the blindfold over her eyes. The man behind her was somehow familiar.
"I'm going to ask you a few simple questions, Nancy, and I want you to think them over. Okay?"
"What have I got to lose?" Nancy replied flippantly. She was tired of this endless charade. "Ask me your questions and then I'm going to have a few for you."
"Who always made sure he hit you with the dodge ball in grade school gym?"
Dodge ball--she still hated the mention of that stupid game.
"Who sent you a homemade Valentine in 7th grade that said you looked like a giraffe?"
Her memory groped for the answer.
"Who spilled red punch on your yellow dress at the first school dance?"
The answer came but she refused to believe it. And then she recalled the humiliation of the moment returned.
"Who--"
"That's enough!" She jerked off the blindfold and spun around to see--
Mike, Brad's twin.
"You!" And then remembering all the events Mike had just aired, Nancy fisted her hands.
"Darlin', don't forget Brad and I are fraternal not identical twins." The man had the nerve to grin at her. "I think it's time you--"
"I'm leaving--" She turned toward the door.
"Don't you want to know what's going on?" Mike asked.
That stopped her. She whirled on him. "Start talking!"
"Tonya and Brad broke up," Mike said, no longer looking as if this were all a joke. "And she got it into her head that you were responsible. So she decided to try to embarrass you with this Valentine Dream Come True Contest stunt."
Mike turned to the people who gathered to watch the festivities. "This contest was fixed."
Mrs. Carroll with the B & B tried to object.
But Mike went on relentlessly. "She paid for the contest. She paid these three men to come to embarrass you publicly--"
The three men--Jason, Paul and Jean Pierre--all objected loudly.
Again Mike went on relentlessly. "I'm sure they were all told it was to be kind of a fun reunion type event like THIS IS YOUR LIFE.
"Yes, " the three agreed almost in unison. "We would never hurt Nancy."
"I'm confused," Nancy said, crossing her arms and glaring at Mike. "Why would this hurt or embarrass me?"
"Because," Mike emphasized the word, "all three are married and are here with their wives. I think Tonya wanted to put you in an awkward spot, in public, in your own town and on film. I think this is supposed to end up on YouTube."
Her mouth dropping open, Nancy put one hand to each side of her head. Her brain felt scrambled.
"Honest," Jason spoke up, "I thought it was all a part of a reality show special for Valentine's Day. We were told the secret admirer stuff was just part of the fun."
The other two agreed and Nancy watched three young women join their husbands. "We went along for the free trip and gifts," one of the wives said. "We didn't know anything about all this other stuff."
Nancy glared at everyone in general and then she turned to Garth. "Okay, what do you have to do with all this?"
Looking sheepish, Garth with Shana close beside him ambled forward. "Tonya hired me." He pointed to Mike. "I was supposed to find you, Mike, and bribe you to leave town. But she didn't tell me anything more than that."
Garth turned to Nancy. "I didn't know it was a nasty trick. And besides I'm just starting as a PI. I knew Tonya's older brother at college. I would have told you if I'd suspected any of this."
Shana claimed his arm and nodded vigorously in support.
Nancy let her hands fall. "Is Tonya out of her mind?"
"Yes," Mike replied. "Absolutely. I came to try and stop this mean-spirited prank, but I couldn't get Mrs. Carroll to believe me."
The lady in question spread her palms in appeal. "I thought everything was legit and he was just trying to make trouble."
Nancy turned to Mike. "You really aren't identical to your brother." Then she punched his arm, not once but three times. HARD. "That's for all those sweet memories of you tormenting me."
"Hey, I was a kid," Mike exclaimed. Then a slow, sexy smile curved his mouth. "But not anymore."
Lyn Cote here--I'll let you take it from there, ladies. But remember true love conquers all--even former beauty queens with a bad case of sour grapes. :-)

Her Secret Valentine Part 6 by Missy Tippens
Her Secret Valentine Part 6
by Missy Tippens
Nancy looked at Garth Willowby’s business card. Looked at the
man himself. Then looked at her best friend, an idea taking shape.
“Are you thinking what I’m thinking,” Shanna asked with a
laugh.
Nancy smiled and turned back to Mr. Willowby. “A P.I., huh? We’re
trying to catch that man, too.”
“So you know him?”
“Well, honestly, I’m not sure. I think he could be my secret…uh…admirer.”
Her scorching face must be as red as the three-inch spike heel in her hand.
His eyebrows lifted, and Nancy wanted to crawl away because laughter
shone in his eyes. He was having entirely too much fun at her expense.
Shanna sidled up beside him and blessed him with one of her
most winning smiles. A smile that tended to bring men to their knees. “Mr.
Willowby—”
“Garth. Please call me Garth.”
Had Shanna just batted her eyes? Yes, she had.
Shanna batted them again. “Garth, could you tell us
what you know about that man?”
The calm, cool charmer’s face suddenly streaked with red at
Shanna’s attention. “I’m afraid I can’t do that. Client confidentiality and all
that.”
“Then I’d like to hire you,” Nancy blurted. “To find that man
who just ran down the street, the man who bought me vanilla biscotti.” A thrill
shot through her. She might soon know the man who’d been wooing her with gifts
and sweet words.
Sweet yet eerily familiar words. She sobered, thinking of
the note that made her heart ache for lost love. Hadn’t it been him who always told her she needed to
get out and enjoy life?
“Let me get this straight. You’d like to hire me to find your
secret admirer?”
“Yep. Because the man’s note said Nancy's a natural beauty,”
Shanna added in a sing-song voice.
The investigator’s Adam’s apple bobbed. “I’d say you’re both
natural beauties.”
Nancy wanted to snap her fingers in front of his face but
refrained for her friend’s sake. Could a romance be blooming? “So Garth, can I
hire you to locate this man?”
Without looking away from Shanna, he nodded. “As long as any leads I get on the man keep me in Cupid’s Corner, I’ll be glad to work with you ladies.”

Love at Cupid's Cove--A Valentine's serial--Lacy Williams

Noise rushed in her ears, as if she’d turned on all of the electric appliances at once; heat flushed through her like she was standing in front of an open oven door.
She could feel his tension, his muscles coiled to move away. Duncan was a man who kept things so tightly bottled inside… until she felt him break, and he crushed her to him.
Moments—or eons—later, he ended the kiss, pressing her head to his broad chest, tucking her head beneath his chin.
“That was a mistake.” She was so close that his words rumbled beneath her cheek. Stubble from his jaw caught in her hair, tugging the fine strands at her temple.
“It doesn’t feel like a mistake,” she said, heart now pounding with more than adrenaline from their kiss. Somehow, she’d found a way inside the walls he kept up to protect himself. Would he push her away?
She wrapped her arms more tightly around his waist, willing him to hold on to her.
“It does to me.” Gently, he set her away from him.
She blinked beneath the harsh kitchen lights, away from his warmth and the protection of his arms.
“I would never… purposely… do anything to hurt you.”
Then why was he pushing her away? It had to be some misguided sense of honor, because of what everyone in town thought about him. Everyone but her.
“Duncan, wait—”
He turned away, one hand on the back of his neck. Headed for the door. “I shouldn’t have come. I should—we should stay away from each other.” He sounded so determined, but she also heard the thread of doubt underscoring his words.
Luckily for the both of them, his statement only sparked a new determination within Lacy—to find a way to make things right for him.

Love at Cupid's Cove-- Valentine Serial--Missy Tippens
Duncan gasped and stood frozen as a chunk of what was left
of the exploded cupcake plunked from his forehead to the ground, leaving his
nose coated in pink icing shrapnel.
The absolute horror on Lacy’s face made something inside him
shift. Pure joy burst through him as he roared with laughter. Barely able to
catch his breath, he doubled over, hands on thighs, and continued to chuckle.
“Oh, Duncan, I’m so sorry.” She sat the box of cupcakes on
the dock. “Here, let me help.”
“Got a bit of a temper, huh?” he asked as she swiped cake
off his forehead.
Her cheeks were as pink as the streak down his nose, and she
looked pretty as a picture in her embarrassment. “I’m sure my parents would
confirm that.”
A grin stretched across his face. And it felt good, so good
to have the weight of guilt lifted, if even just for a minute. “You should’ve
seen your face.”
“You should see yours.” She smiled back at him as she wiped
icing off his chin, her cool hand soft, gentle.
He couldn’t look away from her pretty brown eyes. Though he
knew he didn’t deserve it, he wanted to spend time with Lacy. To get to know
her better. “Looks like you owe me a Valentine.”
Her eyes widened. “Wh…what?”
“You know. Another Valentine cupcake.”
With a rush of breath, she let out a tense laugh. “Oh, these
aren’t for you. I was bringing them since I noticed you gave away your mother’s
cupcakes.”
Yep. Definitely a small town. “Oh, so you just happened to notice
me walk by and just happened to notice I was empty handed?” he teased.
“Well…uh…yes. My shop has windows. Big windows. “ Her gazed
darted out to the water, then back toward town. She gathered up the box of the
three remaining cupcakes and held it out to him. “Plus, remember you’re back in
Cupid’s Cove now. People talk.”
And didn’t he know it. People talked. People remembered
every failure. And some people wouldn’t forgive. “Thanks for checking on me. I
promise I won’t swan dive off any docks.”
She gave a firm nod and jabbed the box toward him once more as
if wanting to get away from him.
“My mother will love these—all three of them.” He couldn’t
help grinning at her, even as his heart hurt that she’d shut him out.
“Tell her it was my pleasure and to have a lovely
Valentine’s Day.” She turned and made a beeline back toward her shop. Back to
all those red and pink-iced Valentine treats meant for couples who were in
love.
It seemed that this year, his mother would be the only one
in the Hines family getting a Valentine.

Love At Cupid's Cove--Valentine serial--Lenora Worth :
Love at Cupid’s Cove
“I’d like to
place an order for some cupcakes. Four or so will be fine.”
Lacy Rose
smiled at the handsome stranger who’d just walked through the doors of her
bakery. What was an interesting man like him doing in quiet Cupid’s Cove,
anyway?
Outside the
seagulls cawed and lifted out over the pristine blue waters of the bay. But a
brisk February wind pushed through the great oaks and swaying palms.
“What kind
of cupcakes?” Lacy asked, her attention moving from the beautiful scene out the
window back to the hunky man staring at her with eyes the same color of the sky.
“Chocolate,”
he said, grinning. “My mother loves chocolate cake.”
“That’s so
sweet,” Lacy replied. “Getting your mother cupcakes for Valentine’s Day.”
“She’d been
sick,” he explained, his hands in the pockets of his lightweight leather jacket.
“She lives just down the way. You might know her. Betty Hines.”
“I do know
Mrs. Hines,” Lacy said while she went about getting his order ready. “So you
must be Duncan. She talks about you all the time. I mean, you’re a hero around
here. You served in the Army, right?”
The smile
on his face died. “Yeah, I did. But I’m home now.” He glanced out the window. “I
need to go. How much do I owe you?”
Lacy
wondered what she’d said to upset him. She’d often heard that soldiers didn’t
like to talk about their time on the front lines. “This one is on the house,”
she said, hoping to make up for her faux pas. “Thank you for serving your
country.”
Duncan took
the pink box but turned back. “Thanks, but you need to understand something. I’m
not a hero. Not by a long shot.”
