Merrillee here with a little guessing game. What
image do you see in the photo below? Do you see a bunch of rocks, a mountain, or did
your gaze gravitate to the sky? The photo was taken in Sedona, Arizona. This
particular rock formation is called the “Snoopy Rock.” Do you see Snoopy? It is
often said that a dozen witnesses to an accident will see a dozen different
things. We are all different, and our life experiences can color what we see.
When you read a book, do you imagine the characters like a movie playing in
your head? As a writer, I write down the movie playing in my mind. I am the
director, and my characters are the actors. What do you see when you read a
book?

I dont see snoppy but do see a rock formation.
ReplyDeletewhen reading I dont see it like a movie. I can imagine the area and stuff but if you asked me to describe the heroine and hero most times I couldn't tell you much. I don't seem to remember things like eye colour, hair colour unless its mentioned several times. One book said the colour blue the eyes were so many times I still haven't forgotten. But most times I dont remember. the last heroine had short curley hair but I pictured her with longer hair. it was only when it was rementioned a few times I could remember. I guess I can picture what is happening but its not like watching a movie as I dont take notice of extra details. I dont tend to take them in but I dont in real life either. If I go to a wedding I know have to take careful note of what someone is wearing and make a point to remember otherwise I most likely will not know what colour the say mother of the bride was wearing. I can visit a house and if asked what colour the walls of a room are I would most often have no idea.
I see a movie too.
ReplyDeleteThat's why when the books are turned to movies I rarely feel pleased with the result. Because that was MY story and I had already made the movie.
Ego steps in the way and it takes time to let go and see with the mood "ok, my book but his/her movie" and I have to enjoy in that fashion.
Curiously enough there are books I didn't like that much and when turned to movie the story becomes enriched somehow.
I think we only get territorial to what pleases us.
I don't see Snoopy, lol!
ReplyDeleteBut I do see pictures when I read. :-)
My eyes went straight to the rock, but no Snoopy-sighting. Of course, I have horrible eyesight. So I'm blaming it on that. Lovely picture, Merrillee!
ReplyDeleteI don't see Snoopy either :( Unless the rock is the doghouse he's always sleeping on and that's him on top. :)
ReplyDeleteNo Snoopy, but the photo appears dark on my screen.
ReplyDeleteI see a movie playing in my mind when I write. And I create my own characters when I read. I don't pay much attention to the way the author describes the hero or heroine because I imagine them in my mind's eye the way I want to see them. :)
Shame on me! Trying to control everything, even someone else's story. (lol)
Jenny, when talked about not remembering what people wore or the colors in rooms, I realized that happens to me, too. Then I wonder why I worry about what I'm going to wear when, most likely, very few people notice. :)
ReplyDeleteTeresa, I very seldom see a movie I like better than the book. Books are so much richer, and we know the characters thoughts as well as their actions. I thought the movie done of THE HELP was one of the few that did a reasonably good job. Two movies that were good, but were better because I had read the books are SEABISCUIT and THE PERFECT STORM.
ReplyDeleteJessica, Renee, Sandra and Debbie, and for anyone else who can't see Snoopy, he's lying on his back on his doghouse--not the big rock but the smaller rock almost in the center of the photo. You can see his nose and his feet sticking up. Sandra had the right idea about Snoopy lying on his doghouse.
ReplyDeleteok if I squink a little I can see snoopy now.
ReplyDeleteits interesting with what people remember I have friends who will remember every detail of what someone wears and often if its new or been worn a lot etc. For me I tend to need to make myself take notice. In saying this if I walk into a room or past a house I can often say something is missing or you moved such and such or where did the tree go. I may not have really taken note before but I do notice when its gone. I know in a book if they say blue eyes earlier and then brown later I will remember or if something is pointed out and then not mentioned I will wonder for the rest of the book.
Now I see Snoopy! Merrillee, thanks for saying it's the smaller rock formation. :)
ReplyDeleteSuch a great point about how we all see things differently.
LOL,
ReplyDeleteI don't even see it when I'm in Sedona. But, I never see the magic eye pictures either.
Pamela
Missy, so glad you could make out Snoopy. I don't know why, but when we were there, I got a kick out seeing that rock formation and how much it looked like Snoopy on his dog house.
