A Summer Love, Chapter 9 - By Jolene Navarro

He could feel Jenny move closer to him.

“You’re leaving? When?” Her voice was soft.

Jake turned his attention from the endless coastal sky and faced her. He took the time to study her features. Over the years she had grown even more beautiful. The beauty came from her eyes. The woman she had grown into was more than his teenage self could have ever imagined.

Back then he really knew her. One look and her thoughts and feeling were clear to him without a single word.

Now? He had no idea what she was thinking. The years had taught her to hide, to hold back. That knowledge just about destroyed him. Had he done that to her?
Losing his train of thought he blinked and refocused.

She had asked him something.

Oh yes, his medical leave.

He leaned back on the rocker. “I plan to finish out my twenty years as soon as I get released. I’m looking at going to Seattle. A buddy told me of a clinic up there that got him back to full duty.”

She sat down next to him. “You don’t have to go all the way to the Northwest coast. Less than forty miles from here there is a clinic you could go too. My mom sends patients to Dr. Yang and her team all the time with really good results. It’s on my short list of places I want to apply. They’d take great care of you. They treat plenty of soldiers.”

She wanted him to stay here? He swallowed, not brave enough to make eye contact, he went back to looking at the water. It was probably just the nurse in her wanting to help. Nothing personal.

All those years ago his stupid teenage self, made sure her love for him had been demolished. Not knowing what to say he opted for silence. That was the safest tactic.

“Jake, Am I the reason you want to leave your home?” She leaned closer, her voice low.

Her scent surrounded him. He closed his eyes. There was no right answer to that question. Before he could come up with any string of words that he was willing to share, Ralph barked and jumped off the porch.

A seagull had landed on the gate at the end of the sidewalk. The gate that had been left open and the single-minded dog was running straight into the street, heading to the beach. The street that hardly had any traffic this time of day now had two delivery trucks heading their way.

Without thought, Jake jumped out of his rocker and leaped down the steps yelling for Ralph to stop. But his knee, the stupid useless knee gave out as his foot hit the ground. He caught the railing before falling on his face and he managed to land on one knee. Through clenched teeth, he grunted.

The small sound stopped Ralph in his tracks. He came running back, nudging Jack with his nose. A whine that sounded like an apology vibrated in the dog’s chest.

Jenny was at his side. Her nursing skills evident in her movements and mannerism. “Easy. Don’t move yet.”

“I’m okay.” He heard his own growl escape his throat. He took a deep breath and evaluated the knee. Slowly he pulled himself up. Her hands stayed in contact with his skin, holding him steady.

This was not how he wanted her to see him. The warmth in her touch made him ache for all the things he had taken for granted. Talking with his mother, Jenny being his. A body that was strong and fast. He had lost everything. No wonder the military didn’t care if he came back.

She guided him to the rocking chair. He looked at the ceiling of the porch then moved his gaze to the beautiful door. All the details of the house his mother had been so proud of.

He hadn’t lost everything. He had the house. But all that did was remind him of the important things he had let slip through his fingers. Time and his arrogance had taken so much and there wasn’t anything he could do to get them back.

Ralph rested his head on Jake’s thigh. His big brown eyes pleading for forgiveness. He scratched the dog in his favorite place. “It’s okay boy. No damage done. But no more seagull chasing.” He lifted the leg out in front of him, straightening the knee then flexed.

“Jake, If I’m the reason you want to leave Summer Shores, we can work something out. We don’t have to see each other. My mother can’t force us to eat dinner together. Your mother’s will stated that we both had to live in Summer Shores for six months. We can do that then decide on the details. You want to go travel the world. I want to buy your half of the house. We can both get what we want.”

“You want to live in my family’s beach house?” He hated the warm satisfied feeling that gave him.

“I couldn’t imagine living anywhere else.” She gave him a smile. Leaning in to pat his leg. “That’s what broke us up. You wanted to leave and never look back. I didn’t know what I wanted. I didn’t know who I was.”

The thought of her living here with another man, raising children that weren’t his, tore at his gut. Why had he been so stubborn back then? But he wasn’t the only one that made mistakes. She had walked away from him and never looked back. “You left too.”

She eased into the rocker next to his. “I did and it was the best thing I could have done. We were so young.” She flashed a crooked grin. “Some might say immature. I did a lot of growing up while I was away.”

He nodded. “Yeah. I thought I was missing out on something. Only to find everything I wanted was right here.” Did they have a second chance? Or was he reading too much…seeing something he wanted to see. He sighed.

Being unsure of himself was new and he hated it. Was he being a fool for hoping? Could he, should he risk his pride again by asking her to give them another chance? They were adults now.

She stood. Looking across the yard, across Shoreline street to the endless horizon.  The waves reaching for the beach over and over again. The air was heavy with humidity and unanswered questions.
Did they have a second chance?

Without turning to him she finally spoke. “This could work Jake. You do your rehab and live here in your family home. I’ll stay out of your way. Then in six months, we see what we want.”

The breeze brushed strands of hair over her shoulders. There was the real question. What did he want? If he agreed to her plan he’d have six months to figure it out. Six months.

The Saga of Lovelace Lane: Chapter Two

Yesterday we launched our new Valentine's Day serial romance. If you didn't catch the first installment, you can read it at "The Saga of Lovelace Lane Valentine's Serial."

The Saga of Lovelace Lane: Chapter Two

Nothing was going according to plan.

Rose parked the rental car next to the cheerful Victorian home where she’d spent so many summers. Her hair tumbled out of its customary bun, and she didn’t have the energy to reset it. After hours in airports, delayed flights, and a stop-and-go drive to Lovelace, she only wanted one thing. To walk down to the lake and let the water calm her soul.

Out in the warm, early evening air, she stretched her arms over her head. The smell of boxwoods, roses and a whiff of the lake brought memories back. It had been a day like this when she’d met the mystery man. If she would have stayed, maybe life would have turned out differently. She shook her head to erase the memory. Love wasn’t for her. The one time she’d tried it, she’d been left broken-hearted, with only an engagement ring shoved in the back of her drawer and a pile of regrets.

Leaving the suitcases in the trunk, she walked past the wraparound porch and headed straight to the path that led to the lake. She’d been a fool to think her ex would be content with a bookworm like her. And after he’d dumped her for a socialite, Rose had doubled down on her goal of becoming an archivist for the San Francisco History Center. No more musty basement for her. If she got the promotion, she’d move to the sixth floor of the beautiful library. And with enough money, she could finally buy the condo she’d had her eye on—the one with the little yard. How she missed having her own outdoor space.

The lake came into view, and all the tension from the past two days dissolved at the sunlight glinting off the blue waters. She broke into a light jog until reaching a bench. She collapsed onto it, her entire body desperate for rest.

Whoever heard of inheriting a town?

Grandfather had been eccentric, but how had he even come to own Lovelace? All those conspiracy theories he’d told her over the years came to mind. Her favorite had been the tall-tale about the French jewels smuggled into America by Benjamin Franklin, the ones entrusted to a young American soldier who was supposed to get them to Thomas Jefferson at Monticello, the ones Grandfather claimed never made it.

Rose chuckled, thankful to have something light to think about. She wished Grandfather could tell her the tale one more time. She’d loved him so much.

She’d sit here a minute longer, but then she needed to grab a bite to eat and figure out what to do about this mess. Owning a town, indeed…

*

No matter how many times he told himself to stay away, he always found himself on the path to the lake. Maybe it was the regret of not asking her name long ago. Maybe it was the regret of not finding a woman to spend the rest of his life with. Back then he’d thought it would be so simple. Out of the millions of women, surely he’d be able to find one to love who would love him back? But love turned out to more complicated than he’d anticipated. That’s why he’d devoted himself to his job. Legal matters, miniscule details, justice—they kept him warm at night.

Speaking of his job…he prayed he’d be able to talk this Rose Redmund into keeping Lovelace. If she sold it to the developer, his adopted home—this tiny village—would be destroyed. The small-town charm would disappear into a sinkhole of upscale restaurants and strip malls. What would happen to Lovelace Diner? And Betty Jo’s Beauty Shop?

The sun was sinking lower into the sky, casting a bright haze in front of him. He shielded his eyes, but he could only make out a shadow heading toward him. He moved to the side, out of the glare, and he halted.

It couldn’t be.

He squinted. Long, brown hair tumbled over her shoulders. The bluest of eyes. Older, more mature. More beautiful than he remembered.

She’d paled, stopping in front of him, and the sunlight looked like a halo behind her.

“You.” Her hand covered her throat. The word was breathless, not a question, just the truth.

“Yes.” He’d imagined her in this spot so many times, but he’d never thought she’d actually be here. “Who are you, and why did it take you so long to come back?”

“I…I don’t know. My life is on the other coast.” She lowered her lashes then smiled shyly. “Rose Redmund.”

She was Rose? His mind stumbled as complications piled up. None of them mattered, though. She was here. His Rose had come home.

“Mason Grant.” He thrust his hand out. “Your grandfather’s executor.”

Flowers in January?

by Jill Kemerer

Where I live in northern Ohio, winter is drab and colorless. Spring flowers don't poke through the ground until late March or early April. I'm always amazed when I see pictures on Facebook of daffodils and tulips popping up in January from other parts of the country.

I find ways to bring flowers and plants into my January life. We have a little tree in our formal dining room. Just looking at the delicate branches and pretty leaves brings hope that the grays, browns and whites of winter will soon pass.

Our church was disposing of unclaimed poinsettia plants a few weeks ago. I brought one home. It had some crispy edges, but it's doing nicely in our front living room. The crimson blossoms and deep green leaves are a welcome jolt of color in our home.

My poinsettia--so far, so good!

Sometimes I'll shop the clearance floral section at our local supermarket. A discounted bouquet brightens any day. They are good for my soul.

Other ways I find color in winter?

- Hiking the trails in our metroparks. Evergreen trees, holly berries, purple branches, yellow grass--all contrast with an overcast white sky.

- Borrowing a Birds & Blooms magazine from our library. Nothing like paging through pictures of beautiful gardens to fight the winter blahs.

- Using neon sticky notes when working and bright colored pens to write in my day planner.

- Buying colorful fruits and vegetables. Oranges seem more vibrant on a January day. Romaine is greener. Strawberries and blueberries add flavor and color to a smoothie.

- Watching a television show or movie set on a beach. HGTV has plenty of options.

Winter seems long and drab for northern states, but I make the best of it.

When do spring flowers appear where you live?

Have a terrific day!

And now…
Chapter Seven
Jolene Navarro

Straightening her spine, Grace wiped the back of her hand across her face.  She was not going to cry. It was Christmas. Everyone loved Christmas.
     She hated it.
If it wasn’t for her grandfather, she’d be in her little apartment ignoring all the memories of the past. Her parents, her little brother…and Christmas with Jericho.
He had given her the one Christmas filled hope and joy after the accident. He was the only one she ever told …No. Don’t go there. He left.
She walked to the window. The peace of the mountains alluded her. She was tired of being strong.

“Grace.” The deep voice vibrated through her blood and rattled her heart. He was back.
She closed her eyes. She couldn’t look at him right now. The darkness started creeping into her vision. Not now. Counting, she took deep breaths. Held for five. And pushed the air out until her lungs burned. She couldn't have an attack now. It had been so long since the last one.
“Grace.” He was closer. His breath caressed her ear.
If she leaned back or half turned, she would be against him, in his arms. There would be no saving her. And when he left this time, she wouldn’t recover. “No, Jericho. Go.”
“That’s what I did last time. You told me to go and I did.” His hands circled her waist. With tenderness that contrasted the roughness of his voice, he pulled her to him.
“When you  left you didn't say a word. You never wrote or called." Now she sounded like a child.
"You told me if I went to not bother contacting you. I didn't. I respected your wishes."
"Then respect them now.” A very thin string held her together and if she gave in all the years of being strong wasted.
“No. I think that was a mistake. I should have stayed and fought for you. Even if it was you I was fighting.” His pressed his cheek against the side of her head. “There has not been a day I haven’t replayed that moment in my head. When your grandfather told me you never married or even dated, well, I thought this Christmas could be a redo. A second chance to get it right.”
One step and she would be out of his arms. Apparently her feet and heart were not in agreement so she stayed a prisoner of her own weakness. The silence pounded in her ears.
"I have a better understanding of your condition. I haven't said anything to your grandfather, but with my training I can help you. It's not your fault."
“I don't know what your talking about. All I know is there are no second chances. You don’t think I haven’t replayed the night my family was killed over and over. If I had done one little thing different in just a few seconds. If I hadn’t…” She choked back the words. She fisted the image in her head and tossed it as far as possible. She couldn't deal with that guilt right now.  “There are no second chances.”
A deep breath, she broke the chains that kept her in his arms and stepped away. A cold draft swirled around her. His warmth gone. She pulled some old homemade ornaments out of the box and put them on the tree without looking and thinking. Instead she kept glanced at him.
He widened the chasm between them. He was going to leave just like last time.
Looking down, his strong shoulders lifted and fell with each breath he took. He looked up at her and grinned. The smile that melted her back in the early days caused her heart to skip one beat. He would have broken it if she had any left. The soft felt decoration slipped from her hand landing with a soft thud at her feet.
"Hi.” He held out his hand. “I’m Jericho.”
Picking up the red hearts her mother had stitched button on, she focused on the tree. When she turned back to him he still stood there with his hand hanging in the air.
She narrowed her eyes. “What are you doing?”

“If you don’t believe in second chances then I want to start over. Here and now, with nothing in the past to get in the way. My name is Jericho. I’m your grandfather’s medical assistant. He talks about you a great deal. It’s a pleasure to finally met you.”

Letting Nature Renew You

by Jill Kemerer

Last week I had a craving to sit and stare at one of the Great Lakes. Ideally, I'd sit on Lake Michigan all day--or for an entire week!--but Lake Erie is within an hour from us. My husband agreed to take a Sunday afternoon drive to check out a nature preserve along Lake Erie. I packed a cooler and a few camping chairs, and we were on our way.

About 90 seconds into the trip, I said, "Let me just check the hours of the park." It's a good thing I did, because it was already 3:00pm and the park was closing at 4:00pm! Our GPS clearly showed a fifty minute drive.

On to Plan B...

We're blessed with many gorgeous parks in our area, and many of them have pretty views of the Maumee River or small, inland lakes. We decided to stay local and went to a heavily wooded Metropark. Once there, we strolled to the pretty lake where families fished and picnicked.

I took this picture last year, but this is the little lake we visited.

It's been an extremely busy month for me, so I was happy to just sit on a bench and let the shimmers on the water whisper all my stress away. After lazing about, we decided to walk along a trail we hadn't tried in the past. I'm usually up for a power walk, but neither my husband nor I had much energy, so we took it slow.

The two-mile path cut through diverse environments. One minute we were in a patch of towering pines, the next we were in a meadow with bluebirds and butterflies. We even saw three deer on our walk. Beautiful!

I took this picture a few years ago, and I still love the message!

I still want to explore the nature preserve we originally intended on visiting, but the local park revived our energy, renewing us for another hectic week. What a blessing!

Do you have pretty parks nearby where you can explore? What about nature renews you?

Have a wonderful day!

Blast from the Past - Guess the Author

It's that time when we glimpse into the past of one of our Craftie Ladies. The first reader to correctly guess this month's author will receive a copy of this author's latest Love Inspired release.

Ready?

Here's your clue:

This author grew up in Michigan and clearly is an attention hog. Look at that costume! Her beautiful sister is NOT strangling the dog—they both loved Lady. This photo was taken when the author was five. She’d taken a tumbling class all year (and bragged to one girl that she could do the splits on a balance beam even though she’d never been on a balance beam) and almost spontaneously combusted at the thrill of dressing up for an actual recital. She lived in this costume until, sadly, she outgrew it.

The author dreamed of being an Olympic gymnast (two tumbling seasons don’t produce Olympic athletes), an Olympic ice skater (she’s skated roughly four times in her life), a dancer in music videos, and pretty much any other activity that requires a costume. Today, she does not wear polka-dotted tumbling costumes, but she does love yoga pants!

Do you know who this is? Leave your guess in the comments to be entered in the contest. And be sure to look for more clues in the comment section throughout the day.

Good luck!

Return to Autumn House, A Halloween Serial Chapter Eleven by Terri Reed

            Poisoned!
Kane’s heart squeezed tight. Hallie was suffering the toxin planted in the cocoa powder meant for Mac.
Jamming his hand into his coat pocket, Kane’s fingers curled around the small vial nestled inside.  Thankfully, he’d had the antidote manufactured to revive Mac when his tormentors had tried to kill him with the same poison.
His gaze zeroed in on the woman holding Mac at gunpoint. The large October moon shone bright through the windows casting a garish glow over the room.
Kane needed a moment to give Hallie the liquid inside the vial. To distract Ivy, he jerked his attention to the busted open window. “Did you hear that?”
“What?” Ivy’s suspicious gaze darted to the window and back to him.
“Someone’s outside,” Kane told her, praying it was true. “I texted the sheriff to let him know he had a dirty deputy and we needed help here at Autumn House.” Kane sent up a prayer that the sheriff would arrive in time.
Ivy thrust Mac away from her and ran to the window, giving Kane the perfect opportunity to give Hallie the antidote. He opened the vial and poured the contents into Hallie’s mouth. He rubbed her throat, making her swallow.
Mac rushed to their side.  The old man’s gaze filled with concern. “Now what do we do?”
            "Pray."
Ivy whirled around.  She stood in front of the open window. The stormy weather blew through the house, making her long dark hair fly around her head like spider legs. “You all are going to die. Then I can sell this place and become rich.” She cackled like an old witch as she raised her weapon, aiming at Mac.
Kane knew he’d never be able to disarm her before she made good her threat. So he sent up a quick prayer and then yelled, “Cowardly!”
Confusion twisted Ivy’s face, making her hesitate.  It was enough though. A large, monster ball of fur leapt through the broken out window. Cowardly’s paws landed on Ivy’s back sending her sprawling to the floor. Her gun skittered away.
Mac jumped to his feet, grabbed the gun and held it on a spitting mad Ivy.
Hallie’s eyelids fluttered open. “What happened?”
Relief flooded Kane. He smoothed away her hair and smiled. “Cowardly saved the day.”
And Kane had saved the woman he loved.
Staring into Hallie’s beautiful caramel eyes, Kane knew he would do anything and everything to stick with the woman who captured his heart so long ago. He sent up a prayer that she’d find it in her heart to forgive him and hopefully, one-day love him again.
Before he could articulate all that was in his heart the house was flooded with flashlight beams and men as the sheriff and his good deputies swamped the place.  The next hour was a maze of chaos as paramedics tended to Hallie, Mac and Kane.  Ivy and Cris were arrested, handcuffed and led away.  Then the sheriff and Hallie turned expectant gaze on Kane and Mac.
“For months someone was has been trying to kill me,” Mac explained to the sheriff. “Kane was the only one who believed me." He turned to Hallie.  "He saved me from certain death more than once.”
Hallie’s surprised gaze zoomed to Kane. He shrugged, uncomfortable with the praise but liking the tender expression on Hallie’s lovely face.  “We devised a plan to fake Mac’s death to draw out the killer.”
“And it worked,” Mac stated. “Though I never would have guessed the would-be murderers would turn out to be a relative and Ivy. She'd been coming to the house to check on me. I thought she was being so nice but she has a heart full of evil.”
Hallie slipped her arms around Kane. “I should have trusted you.”
He savored having her in his arms. “You had no reason to. I hurt you badly years ago.”
“You did.” She titled her head back to stare into his face. “Why? What did I do wrong?”
He let out a tortured groan. “Oh, honey, it wasn’t you. Your parents threatened my family. I caved to their pressure. I should have fought for the woman I loved.”
Hallie pulled back. “My parents!” Shaking her head, tears welled in her eyes. “I should have guessed.” Then her eyes widened. “You loved me?”
He cupped her cheek. “Still do. Can you forgive me?”
“Of course.” Her brows drew together. “You still love me?”
“I do.” He lowered his mouth and hovered over hers. “Could you ever love me again?”
She let out a small laugh. “I have always and always will love you, Kane Cornelison.”  She pressed her mouth to his.
Mac clapped and Cowardly’s distinctly happy barked punctuated the joy filling Autumn House.

Blast from the Past - Guess the Author

It's that time once again, when we glimpse into the past of one of our Craftie Ladies. The first reader to correctly guess this month's author will receive a copy of said author's debut Love Inspired release (there's your first clue).

Ready?

Here's your clue.

This is a picture of one of my sister, my best friend, and me dressed for Trick or treating.  I'm the artist in the middle. I guess even back then I had a yearning to be creative. The pink fuzzy thing in the corner is the poncho my mother was wearing - the very height of fashion back then.
I have three younger sisters and no brothers. My father always said he traded in a mother and four sisters for a wife and four daughters - and he loved every minute of it. Speaking of my dad, he got in big trouble when I decided on my Halloween costume the following year. I wanted to be a bride so my mom was going to let me wear her bridal gear. Except she couldn't find her wedding gown. As it turned out, my father, trying to be helpful, took her at her word when she muttered (after a strenuous move) that she should have just thrown out the gown. Yes, dad put it on the curb and the trash men picked it up.

Do you know who this is? Leave your guess in the comments to be entered in the contest. And be sure to look for more clues in the comment section throughout the day.

Good luck!

Blast from the Past - Guess the Author

It's that time again, when we glimpse into the past of one of our Craftie Ladies. The first reader to correctly guess this month's author will receive a copy of said author's latest Love Inspired release.

Ready?

Here's your clue.

This is a picture of my son and me deep sea fishing in the Gulf on my stepfather's boat. Every summer Shaun and I would go to see Tony and my mother. A highlight of our vacation was always going out on the boat, fishing and spending time on the beach at Ship or Horn Island. My son still talks about those fishing trips. He loves to fish now and I think it is because of those times in Biloxi. Both Tony and my mother are dead, but I have such fond memories of time spent with them. Seeing this picture brings those memories to the foreground.

FEATURED BOOK AND INTERVIEW: A Father's Second Chance by Mindy Obenhaus

Repairing Her Heart

Businesswoman Celeste Thompson has one goal: to make her restaurant and hotel a success. She doesn't need any distractions, even from handsome contractor Gage Purcell and his two adorable little girls. Besides, single dad Gage is just biding his time before a big job at the mines comes through. But as Celeste's project springs to life, their arguments transform into attraction. Gage isn't looking for romance, especially not with another career-driven woman like his ex-wife. But openhearted Celeste is more than just another work-consumed client. She might just be his happily-ever-after.

Interview:
How exciting to have Celeste Thompson the heroine from A Father’s Second Chance written by Mindy Obenhaus an August release from Love Inspired Romance .

1.  Celeste, tell me the most interesting thing about you.
I doubt there’s all that much about me that people would find real interesting, however I did give up a very lucrative job in Ft. Worth, Texas to reopen my grandmother’s restaurant in the tiny town of Ouray, Colorado.
2.  What do you do for fun?
Cook. Yes, it’s what I do for a living, but only because I love it so much.
3.  What do you put off doing because you dread it?
There aren’t a lot of things that I procrastinate on. I tend to be a woman of action.
4.  What are you afraid of most in life?
Being abandoned by someone that I love.
5.  What is the most important thing to you?
Family and faith
6.  Do you read books? If so, what is your favorite type of book?
Cookbooks, naturally. And the Bible. Being so busy at the diner, there’s not room for anything else.
7.  If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?
I’m very untrusting when it comes to matters of the heart. I wish I could learn to open up more.
8.  Do you have a pet? If so, what is it and why that pet?
I do not have a pet. And please don’t count that bear that was in my garage.
9. If you could travel back in time, where would you go and why?

I would go back to the day my father left and beg him to stay.
