With A Little Help from our Friends

This is Merrillee, who is thinking about friendship. Here is a video with a portion of a song about friends made popular by the Beatles and Joe Cocker. Take a quick listen and think about your friends.

We all need friends. As authors we create friends for our heroes and heroines. These friends, secondary characters, serve as sounding boards and advisers for our main characters.

I've been thinking about friends because my mother-in-law recently visited with a friend she has known for over seventy years. In a few days, I'm going to be attending my high school reunion, and I will get to see Marita, my friend from high school. Here is a photo of us taken several years ago.

Proverbs 17:17 "A friend loves at all times,
and a brother is born for a time of adversity."

Tell us about a special friend or someone you've know for many years.

  1. I agree. I've made so many wonderful friends because of my writing life. I cherish each of them. And I love my 'civilian' friends, too. Our friends lift us up and carry us when we're down. Great post!

  2. My closest friend and I met in college and that was a long time ago. She and her sister lived in the dorm room across the hall from me and when my father got really sick and I couldn't get home they went out of their way to help me through that time. We live in the same state but see each other rarely because of distance and time AND Life. But whenever we get together it's as if the time between visits was only a day or two. And we know if the other one needs help we will be there for them.

  3. My best friend from high school is Patty. We live four states from each other and see each other about every three years. Yet, when we see each other, we're eighteen again and heading down to the Missouri River with our other girlfriends to just hang and have a good time.

  4. Lenora,
I know what you mean about making a lot of friends because of writing. It is a special bond we share.

  5. Ellen,
It is wonderful to have friends who help us in a time of need. I like having e-mail and things like FB so I can keep up with friends that I rarely see.

  6. Pamela,
I two have friends that I don't see for many years, but when we get together, it seems as though time has stood still.

  8. I would dare to say that my friends are God's Best Gift for me ever.
They are in my thoughts since I wake up until I say my prayers - and include them in my thanks and requests - at night.
I have all life (you know, those who are friends since High School) friends and I have new friends with different degrees of contact with them, but all to treasure and hold. Even my virtual friends - including you Merrilee - are part of my day...
And I made great friends at Love Inspired Books, characters the Craftie Ladies created and are an inspiration for me...
Life is only possible with Lots of Love from our Friends, I'd say.

  9. My best friend and I have been BFF's since we were 3 years old! Our moms were best friends so it was natural that we would be too! Our friendship has survived many moves, different states, etc. but no matter where we are, our friendship is there! I also have a 2nd best friend that I've had since my senior year in high school that is fabulous! Friends are a total necessity! Valri

  10. Teresa,
You are so right about friends. It is wonderful to know that we lift each other up in prayer. I'm so glad to be one of your online friends.

  12. Hi, Merrille, great video. I just finished reading a book my English penpal of over 40 years sent me. Long friendships add so much to life!
